Beer Sensory Workshop - May 14

Iowa Brewers Guild & the Iowa Craft Beer Tent will be presenting an off-flavor sensory training workshop at The Quarter Barrel Arcade & Brewery on May 14. Cory O’Neel of Olde Maine Brewing Company will be leading the workshop. Learn not only how to identify off-flavors such as acetaldehyde, ...

Bourbon Barrels

Hi guys, I've got 4 Wild Turkey Bourbon barrels at The Quarter Barrel that I don't think I'll get around to using any time soon. I picked them up late winter/early spring (I think they showed up early in February), but have delayed the project they were intended for. I used a few from my initial ord...

18.5 cf chest freezer free for the taking

I've got an old but functional Montgomery Ward Deluxe 18 freezer that needs to go and I'd hate to see it hit the dump.

I have rinsed it out, but the inside could still stand a little tlc.

Mulberries

Does anybody have a source for mulberries? ...like an annoying tree in your yard that's currently just staining your driveway? I want to try a wild sour aged on mulberries and Google has not been friendly in my search for this silly berry that I remember growing like a weed around Iowa when I was a ...

Re: no sparge

If you acid adjust your mash, go thin. The point of no sparge mashing is to avoid the pH upswing towards the end. If you can adjust your mash to the pH you want, that's no issue. I would expect good efficiency at the greater dillution (there are compensating factors), and I can't think of other issu...

Re: Quarter Barrel

The games will be quarter play for the most part. But we will always keep a few games on free play. We're not going to be making bank on the games, but I still want them to generate enough income to cover maintenance costs and to be able to expand and update the selection.

Re: Quarter Barrel

I'm excited for this. Will I be able to bring my 11 and 13 year old there to play games? Are you going to have any food? Yes and Yes. I am planning to keep this venue relatively family friendly---at least during day and evening hours. After 9 or 10pm children will be a bit out of place. We will hav...

Re: Quarter Barrel

We've got a building. Just closed Tuesday on 616 2nd Ave SE. The building has been a string of bars since about 1996. It's a bit tacky inside, so I'm gutting the place. No poles for dancers. Maybe some cages though  I've never heard of a brewpub/stripclub. I feel like there must be some obs...

Re: Quarter Barrel

Hi guys, The Quarter Barrel is my doing. I wasn't able to make it down to the Beer Nuts meeting this evening---my attendance is generally intermittent at best---but if you have any questions about the business, ask away. Yes, we're going to be both a classic arcade and a brewery. Can the market hand...

Yep, two Chris here at Millstream now. All day long I hear, "Chris... no, other Chris." I started wearing stocking caps over the winter, so they've tried imposing the name Waldo on me, but I'm hoping that doesn't stick. I'd love to check out or share ideas about basement brewing set ups. I...

Hi everyone. I'm planning to attend the meeting tomorrow at Bricks and figured I'd introduce myself here first. I just moved to Cedar Rapids a few months back to take a brewing job at Millstream after leaving Chicago where I worked at Goose Island. I haven't had a chance yet to set up a home brewing...

Your beer may also benefit from the addition of some caramel malt to balance out the bitter roastiness of the coffee--both in terms of a little caramel sweetness and a slight bump to the alcohol level. Say, maybe a 1/2 lb of c-60? I like that your porter recipe doesn't include any roast barley (thou...

There are a handful of brewing programs out there. I tried Promash and it just didn't seem that user friendly to me. I've been using Beer Tools Pro for the last year or so, and love it. Everything is laid out in a comfortable manner. It's as well designed as it is conceived. I still haven't figured ...

SPAM messages

Has anyone else been getting a lot of SPAM messages from this forum lately? I've gotten 2 or 3 in the past week. At any rate, I'll take this opportunity to introduce myself. My name's Chris. I've been a lurker on this forum since this past summer, mostly because I'm living in Chicago right now. I'll...
