All I need is the specialty grains less the flaked barley, so would like to go in on a NB order to reduce shipping. Also, I may have enough flaked barley to cover most everyones need. It is really cheap since it was acquired though a Millstream order. Anyone else going to have what we need for specialty grains from some of their bulk orders?

With as much speciallty grain as we need, I would give Midwest a look. I ordered from them the last time I brewed because pretty much all their prices are significantly lower than NB even after shipping. Their grain is way cheaper as they offer reduced prices on 5 and 10 lbs. quantities. My order through Midwest was $65 versus over $80 through NB. Got my order in two days.

I agree with CJ. I use English yeasts fermented at low temps quite often and they are typically very agressive and I have the spatter marks on the brewery wall to prove it. I ferment in 6.5 gallon carboys and find they have plenty of headspace for 5 gallons of wort with the 1056. This beer would require a huge starter. I highly recommend brewing a lower gravity beer around 5% ABV with the 1056 yeast you need for the stout. Basically let the low gravity beer be your starter for the stout. Rack that first beer from primary the same day you brew the stout and drain your imperial stout wort right on top of the yeast cake left in the primary.

When it comes to filling day, let me know if you would like to borrow a keg to transport your wort. They are easier to haul around than a carboy and won't leak or spill if they fall over. I may have some empty ones available.
Once the millstream order comes in, I'll have some extra (I think) Roasted Barley and Chocolate Malt. I could use 1/2 lb of your Flaked Barley.

If nobody has any Flaked Oats, Caramel/Crystal 120L or Victory Malt, I'm going to order them along with yeast tomorrow. I have all the hops and even enough extra for a couple of people.

4lbs 2-row
1lb each of chocolate, flaked oats, flaked barley, roasted barley, crystal 120, and victory.
6lb gold LME
3lb light DME
brewers licorice
Yeast
1oz each of Chinnok and centennial
2 oz EKG
Running $ total is around $55 without shipping. I'll round it to $60 for you. Thanks.
John,
I'll add your order to mine. Once the Millstream order comes in, I'll have enough 2 row to sell you some and I think (not sure how many people I'm splitting a bag with...) some roasted barley and chocolate malt too. I don't know when you are brewing, so if you don't want to wait, I understand. I have the hops already, since I bought a pound of each a couple of weeks ago. Let me know if I should order everything or if you can wait for Millstream.

I don't think that will fit in my fridge, but just in case what are the dimensions? Does it have ball valves for transferring? I don't want to carry 20 gallons of RIS up and down my basement stairs.

Jim, that sounds great! Whenever you get the grain order in send me a note and I'll pick up my ingredients. Do you have a grain mill? I'll need to crush my grains before I take them home. Maybe we could all meet at the end of this week and combine all of the supplies and divide up that way. I know Franklin mentioned he might have some of the flaked grains (can't remember which ones). Any thoughts?

Lee, I'm not sure the spec on it, I'm not home right now, butr will get acircumference when i get home later today. It's a tandard demi-john style with the basket. It fits fine in my fermentation freezer. I'll check the basket diameter when i get home.

DrPaulsen wrote: If I can get it cleared with upper management, I propose doing this on Monday, March 7 (sorry, weekends are no good since my house is on the market). I'll gather up all the ingredients and take care of the yeast. As a starting point, I'd like to claim 10 gallons and give away the other 10 to whomever shows up to help. You don't even have to pay for the ingredients, just be willing to grind grain and shovel out the fermenter, since we'll be going through a full 50 lb sack of malt and the brew day will probably take 8 hrs.

If you've never done an all-grain brew before, want to see an electric brewery in action, want to come by and drink my beer, and/or just want an easy way to help fill the club barrel, let me know.
What time would you be starting? If you can hold off until 2p, I'd love to come help.

I have a grain mill so that won't be a problem.

I did a price compare between NB and Midwest, and for what I've got on the list so far, Midwest is cheaper even after shipping.

Is there anyone else that needs any supplies for the RIS brew? I'm planning on submitting the order this evening. So far, I've just got orders from John E and Matt(?).

Here is the current order:
Caramel 120L (Briess) 5 lb. $6.50
Victory (Briess) 5 lb. $7.50
Flaked Oats 5 lb. $5.00
Lactose - 5 lb. $19.75
Licorice Stick- 1.5 oz. $3.00
American Ale Activator Wyeast ACT1056- 4.25 oz. 3 x $5.75 = $17.25
Briess Gold Unhopped Liquid Malt Extract 6 lb. $14.50
Munton & Fison (UK) Light DME- 6 lbs. $23.90

I've ordered the grain in 5 lb bags as it is cheaper that way, so I'll either have some extra for a couple of people, or I might do another 5 gallons if we need more to fill our barrel.

Does anyone else want to be part of this order? Last call...

I plan to dough in the first batch no later than 8 AM. We will undoubtedly still be brewing by 2 pm. The second mash should be underway by that point.

I have a green light from the boss, so I'm definitely brewing next Monday (7-March). If anyone else is interested feel free to send me a PM so this thread doesn't get bogged down.
