BJCP study group, who's in?

Post by BrewHound »

Fellow Brewing Brothers & Sisters,

Now that the tech meeting is off of the ground. I would like to kick up the next event that I am interested in. I want to put together a study group to to work towards BJCP certification sometime next spring.

We have a large club and only 1 certified BJCP judge, which quite frankly is a little embarrasing. I know many members want to get certified. So I want to bring a bi-monthly study group to the club. We will study the guidelines for a 1 year, detailing history, characteristics, flavors, and ingrediant contributions. We will also build a contamination kit and learn to identify infections and contaminations.

The next tech meeting will be the kick off for the study group. After that the study group will seperate from the tech meeting. with the way a study group is put together we will take turns hosting for this right off the bat as it requires little to no effort by the host but rather is a combined effort of preperation by participates for the group. So please, only sign up if you are interested and willing to do you part to help the group as one weak link makes the entire group suffer. More details will be presented at the tech meeting. So if you are interested please attend. If you can not attend please post you interest here. So that homework assignements can be given out. Yes this study group will come with homework. One of the things we are going to do is build a simple study guide for each sub catagory within the BJCP. So each person will be given a style to condense for incorporation into the study guide. the meetings will serve to go over the consolidated information and for group tastings (stylistic and infection).

Please bring a favorite beer (or non favorite) that is listed as a style example to the next tech meeting (March 9, 2011), this is more for a kickoff celebation then anything else as we will just being doing an into at the first meeting. Also this thread will contain a poll for the best day/night as we are already pretty packed with meetings and events This study group meeting will be very short, we are going to shoot for a no longer then 2 hours (maybe less), for this as analyzing beers for stylistic and infection is very trying on the pallet. This will not require you to bring any home brew (unless infected) or any food this will be a good old fashion high school study group. now is really the time as they just keep expanding the guildelines, making the test preperation more and more difficult. So who is in?

Jeremy

This sounds like a good idea. I will need to discuss with my wife what might work. What time of day are we thinking? 8:30 pm is a lot easier start time for me to make because I help get the kids to bed at 8:00 pm. I know this may be too late for some folks though. I cannot attend the March 9th meeting as I will be in LA for work next week.

That would probably not be too late as the meetings will be short, that is why I wanted to go with a more frequent meeting for a shorter duration. Also, not sure who this will work for, the weekends are on the poll to see if that would be a better solution. Speak with the Mrs and post. I will put your name down for assignements and if you have problem with being able to do this just post. I think a good portion of the work and writting excersies can be done through PM and email for this, which is what I want to do, the meeting stuff will be saved for where items where it is of value to be able to learn from each other and discuss things. I am also thinking a buddy system might work good here so that we have a partner that we can arrange small out of the way inpromptu meeting with to work on things.

We will do our best to accomidate and most likely will hold the bi-monthlies on a different day and time, so that if you can't make one you can make the other. maybe one on the weekend during the afternoon and one during a week day later in the evening, or something just an example.

Hey, I just picked up a 6-er of 2Hearted ale for this. I didn't know if we wanted to post what we're bringing, so we can maybe spread out the styles.

Hey Tom, glad to have you. My understanding is to just bring a beer listed as a style example in the BJCP guidelines book.
You can find the style guidelines here:
http://www.bjcp.org/2008styles/catdex.php

Just click on a style you like and go to the "commercial example" section of the guidelines. See you this evening

No problem Matt. Just make sure you drink something listed in the guide and write a 500 word description of it! :D
