March 2011 Meeting on the 17th @ 7PM

Post by Matt F »

Hello Beer Nuts! The March 2011 meeting is on Thursday the 17th at 7:00 pm. It is St. Patrick's Day so I will take a page from a St. Patrick's Day I spent in Portland a few years ago. I expected a lot of dry stouts but what I found a lot of was all kinds of stouts and particularly imperial stouts. So in honor of this, the main style will be any stout. Of course, feel free to bring anything you like, especially your homebrew.

The meeting is at my house (Matt Franklin) which is on the southeast side of Cedar Rapids between 1st Avenue and East Post Road. It is not your normal location. It has a curvy gravel drive so please drive slowly. Parking is limited near the house, but we should be able to get three cars wide in front of the garage and the rest pull in on the left side perpendicular to the drive. I attached a picture as a guide. Park like you see the white boxes in the attached picture. Try to keep it tight like a parking lot. You can also park along the main road and walk down to the house.

I HIGHLY encourage you to car pool for two reasons. Parking is tight by the house and there may be extra law enforcement out and about on St. Patrick's Day. As always, please be responsible if you are driving. Google gets you close but Bing sends you to a completely different location. The address is 1102 30th Street Drive SE, Cedar Rapids, IA, 52403.

From 1st Ave, turn at the Walgreens on 29th Street Drive heading East towards East Post Road. Stay on 29th as it curves and becomes 30th Street Drive. My house will be on your left (North side). If you get to Indian Hill Road or East Post Road you went too far.

From East Post Road, turn at the intersection with Lakeside Road and 30th Street Drive heading West on 30th Street Drive. My house will be on your right (North side). If you get to 1st Avenue you went too far.

I have a shared driveway with 1100 30th Street Drive SE. There is a blue Linn County address sign with my house number on it on 30th Street Drive and a concrete sign at the base of my mailbox that says Franklins. Enter the driveway between the blue 1100 and 1102 signs. My neighbor has a large, silver and red grey hound bus in our shared driveway that is hard to miss on the left. You can park on the right side at the top of the drive if it looks too full up by the house. My house is the second house. The road goes down a hill and turns sharply to the left and then back to the right.

I am a basketball junkie so I will have the tournament games on as it is the first day for March Madness. There will be a club chili competition so we should have plenty to eat. Someone will post more details about that before the meeting. If you have trouble finding the place call my cell at 654-5146. I look forward to seeing you there!

Chili Cook-off

Post by tony b »

Just going to blow this wide open this year. All styles of chili are welcome (even that abomination that those folks in Cinncinatti make!) in a straight up head-to-head competition.

However, after learning from the BBQ Brisket competition, the voting will be slightly different this time. I will print up voting tickets for both First and Second Place. So you can vote for your top 2 favorites.

Let's hope Franklin's electrical system can handle this many crockpots plugged into his basement outlets!!

Given that we'll be sampling lots of yummy chili, those who don't enter are encouraged to bring snacks that complement the chili - from chips, crackers, cheese, fruit, sweets, etc.

Oh yeah, and BEER. Bring lots and lots of BEER to put out the flames!!

The club will bring the bowls, spoons, napkins, etc. for the tasting.

Plus, there March Madness, too!!!

Will there be an official kick-off (or perhaps tip-off) for the chili comp? Reason I'm asking is I probably won't be able to get there until 7:30p but am bringing some chili to enter. So is there a entry deadline and when will the voting commence?

Last time we did this we had open voting for a while as it took some time to get through all the chili. You should be OK.

Yes, no problems with being a bit late. It will take awhile, like Matt said, to sample them all and pick your favs.

Anyone going to Beer Club who lives by me who could give me a ride? I am trying to avoid driving tonight. Could kick a couple of bucks for gas or as an Orchuk Tolerance fund if needed?

I can pick you up on my way. I live in your area. I probably won't be leaving my house until 7:15 or so though.

Matt, thank you for hosting the club yesterday evening, always a good time as usual. Nice to see your brewery in operation again and ferementation vessels in the fridge. Brew Stong my brother.

As for the Chilli, they were all very good last night, and all should be proud of the chillis they produced. I was a very hard judged and I saw many people dileberating and having to taste and retaste to submit there votes. However, I am a walking Mathane plant today, and am fairly certain that my cubemates here at work will be organizing a lynch mob hunting Tony down due to his organization of this effort.

Any way, thanks Matt for hosting and Tony for organizating the Chilli cook-off and am looking forward to next months as usual.

March 2011 Meeting on the 17th @ 7PM

Beer Nuts –

I’d also like to welcome the many new and nearly new members to the group, lots of new faces last night. I hope everyone got a chance to introduce yourselves and look forward to seeing you all again.

Again please be looking for the post on the club tap box build and if you have any parts or skills to donate that would be much appreciated as were really pushing to have this completed by Benz fest in May.

Thanks again Franklin for having the group over, and glad to see I didn’t see anyone in the ravine when I left.
