AHA Big Brew Day - May 7th, 2011 - Are we doing anything?

Post by BrewHound »

I know there was talk about this at the last meeting. That Little 'T' was not going to be available this year for the Big Brew Day on his system. However, we were welcome to brew in their parking lot for it if we wanted.

Are we going to participate in Big Brew Day this year? If so we should start solidifying plans now prior and club's April 21st meeting, so that the club can order the ingrediants and decide which of the recipes we would be brewing.

Anyway, just checking if we are participating and what the plan for this going forward was.

I would like to do something too. Not sure what but would like to do something. We could get a few folk's systems together and brew at someone's house too. May 7th is approaching quickly.

We've been talking to folks up at the Blairs Ferry Rd HyVee Drug about doing something together; maybe this is the thing to do? If members are portable with their equipment, we could do a brew in their parking lot. Who knows, HyVee might spring for the ingredients as their contribution to the event and maybe a little coin towards the Club?

Plan B, we could talk to Matt over at Benz and see if we could set up there?

The issue with the HyVee is Wayne. He is still put with his back injury. I will stop in tomorrow and see when he is returning.

My setup is pretty portable. All I would need is a water source for my chiller or ice.

I think it'd be fun to it like most clubs and make it a big demo with several batches going. Timing is good too since Benz Beer Fest is the next weekend followed by a Longbranch club meeting.

We should register it with the AHA site if we're doing it.

I'll probably brew that day anyway, so if no one wants to do a group brew at 3B then your are welcome to come hang out at my place.

Sounds like 3BB is the place. We'll just set up outside, like always, but since LCt's equipment is booked up, we have other logistics to work out.

Several folks have offered up equipment, so we need to organize that part. Randy, you up for that challenge? (While Pottsie has offered to bring equipment, we want his focus to stay on the tapbox until it's done.) We'll need to pick the recipe and get ingredients ordered/donated. How much do we want to make? Who's going to be the caretaker until it's done?

It wouldn't be Big Brew Day w/o Baconator, so if someone will bring a grill, I'll make the Baconator for snacking.

Big T, you have the club tent?

Are we registering for big brew on the AHA website? Might be a way to let people in the area know what we're doing.

OK folks, it's time to step and commit. So far I'm the only one who has posted an interest in brewing. Not to undersell my operation, but one 2.5 gallon batch on "Big Brew Day" seems extremely weak. So is anyone else available that can bring their brew system? If not I'd prefer to just brew at my house.

Also, since it looks like we'll be using our own ingredients for this, I'm going to either brew the IPA recipe or just do the Alt that's next in my brew schedule.

Little T: can you provide an outdoor water source for wort chillers? Mine is set up for a garden hose.

Last year we had set a meet time of 8am. Do we want to go with that again or a little later? What time do we need to be cleared out of the 3B lot?

I'd be up for helping out. However: I only have equipment for a 5 gallon extract batch, and I won't be available until close to noon.

I have not committed, because I am not able to come. I have flag football, and scouting events that day. One of these days, I am going to get to big brew day.

Since it looks like I'm the only one interested in brewing I'm going propose we move this to my place. Other than me not needing to haul all my gear (and likely forgetting something), this has the following benefits:
  • Shelter if it rains
My fridge is full of beer
I have a grill and a fire pit
plenty room to work on the tap box
    lots of parking
no worries, no time limits etc.
If there's no objection I'll go ahead and post to the public board.
