Brewing Today

Post by Gjoseph »

Starting around 1:30 or 2:00 pm 5 of us will be brewing various extract kits in my garage. Teaching one new guy, brewing another new guys second, another new guys third and then another guy and myself will be brewing. All sorts of different flavors - I am doing a coffee porter, think we have a blond ale, a pumpkin spice, the starter kit brown and forgot the last one.

Lol what a cluster. Boil overs, boils during steeping, hops mixed together that were supposed to be 45 minutes apart, then dropped on the garage floor and hopefully seperated properly according to green and a little greener, leaky wort chillers, bad temperature taking (ie if you have the thermometer right next to the wort chiller it is going to read a lot lower than what it is), yeast exploding out of the tube onto the clorox wipe and into the wort, etc. Just about anything that could go wrong did. At least I saved mine for last and avoided all the same problems.

Funny thing is, all these screw ups will probably lead to an awesome beer that can never be duplicated again...fun times...

Wow, for a second there I thought you meant all those things happened to one batch of beer then I recalled you were helping others brew several batches. For me that was one of the first hurdles to get over. I made a bunch of little mistakes just from not being familiar with the process.

Yeah I let one guy who was on his second batch run on his own, helped a new guy and then the guy who should have know what to do, didn't read directions or pay attention to his steep/boil. Plus he had so many additions that his 5 gallon stock pot that started with 3.5 gallons of water was an inch from the top by the time all his additions were added (some of which were supposed to be at the end) so it will be intersting to say the least.
