I've been making ciders for 3 years as well and will be interested in trying some of yours, Rick. By the way, congrats on making 2nd round for one of your ciders! Good luck! Count me in for the meeting.

Rick -- what is your address? Is the meeting still on for this coming Thursday? 7 pm or 8 pm?

I hope to come and will bring a couple of my own ciders, along with the following:

Woodpecker
Crispin bittersweet
Crispin honeycrisp
Magner's

Rick,
Are you going to be fine with more than 5 people assuming we can meet in your garage or outside? It sounds like this may end up being more like 10 or so people. So far the weather forecast looks like Thursday will be a bit cooler (75F) with the usual chance of showers.

If that's too many people, is there a backup? I'd offer my place again. It's about the same distance as to Mt Vernon for most people. In any case we need to solidify the plans so people know when/where to show up.

June 9th Tech Meeting: Ciders

Cider Making

The address for the the June 9th Tech Meeting is:

Rick Young
319-360-0060

307 5th Ave NW
Mt Vernon, IA

Mt Vernon is not big, so its hard to get lost. I live just 2.5 blocks north of the stoplight near Cornell College on 5th Ave.

If you want to sit, bring a lawn chair ( I have a few that I will make available). We will meet outside and discuss/sample ciders under the stars. I have a handout for all attendees, and lots of ice cold cider samples.

If you have made a cider or bought a commercial cider that you want to share, please bring it along.

Note:
If there is a significant chance of rain (because my rental house is small) we will move the meeting to Jeremy's house so we can have it indoors. Check the forum on Thursday or give myself or Jeremy a call to confirm

Look forward to sharing with all of you my "cider" knowledge and inventory.

By the way, if 30 plus people show up Thursday night, there is a a lot of room outside to handle the group. I have a enclosed popup canopy where I will put glasses, cider, ice, etc.... not an issue.

My rental house is probably 600 sq ft total I think... so an indoor hosting would be a slight problem (it would be a lot like the recent Des Moines Beer Festival).... hence the Jeremy backup plan. According to Weather.com, there is only a 40% chance of rain on Thursday...

Come One / Come All

It looks pretty likely to me that it will rain tonight. Do we have a backup rain location?

Rick asked me to be the rain backup in my basement. So please check this thread prior to departing for the meeting tonight. This is Rick's meeting so I will leave it up to him to make the call on whether or not to change the venue to my basement.

but again, my place is the rain backup for tonights tech meeting, if it is raining heavily I would assume it would be changed to my place.

According to Weather.com there is only a 10% chance of rain at 7 pm... so we are going to roll the dice and go for the gusto (sound like an old time cheap beer ad?). Tonight's event is at my home in Mount Vernon! Address is in a previous post.

Tom Hicks is bringing a couple of extra popup canopies just in case.

See all of you at 7pm for some hardcider!

And... If anyone has a couple dry firepit sized logs, bring those, I have a portable firepit I will light up to make this outdoor cider tasting a kickoff for "beer camp."

To my friends who enjoy a glass of hardcider... and those who don't.

As Ben Franklin said: “In hardcider there is wisdom, in beer there is freedom, in water there is bacteria.”

In a number of carefully controlled trials, scientists have demonstrated that if we drink 1 liter of water each day, at the end of the year we would have absorbed more than 1 kilo of Escherichia coli, (E. coli) - bacteria found in feces. In other words, we are consuming 1 kilo of poop.

However, we DO NOT run that risk when drinking hardcider because hardcider has to go through a purification process of filtering and fermenting.

Remember:
Water = Poop
Hardcider = Health

Therefore: It's better to drink hardcider and talk stupid, than to drink water and be full of shit.

I have to back out, got some bad news about my back today and it is not getting better, can't sit for more than 10 minutes at a time and preferred if I don't sit at all. So the kinda kills the drive for me. Going to sulk in the cider I picked up at home...
