Pilzen malt and hot break.

Post by kjball »

I made a Saison today using Pilzen as the base. Overall the results look promising. I did notice that there was a tremendous amount of hot break rolling around in the kettle during the boil. Is this normal with pilz?

Have you changed your roller setting on your grain mill? I was wondering if maybe you got more solids through your mash tun screen then normal? I use a lot of Pilsener and have not noticed any extra foam.

no changes to the mill that I know of. I don't really adjust or pay much attention to it. It wasn't really foam, I used fermcap for the first time during this batch. It was like soft stringy chunks of stuff. I guess the fermcap could be the cause. The results look good. I ended up with ~80% efficiency, which is quite high for me. (I usually run in the low 70's)
