Finishing Spec Grav

Post by Smed »

I just bottled an IPA last night and the fisnishing spec grav was 20. That is a significant drop fromt he 90 it started out as, but I am wondering if all of that residual sugar is going to make it sweet. Sweet would not be at all what I was looking for.

Is 20 to high for a finishing spec grav?

Well, if you started at 1.090 and finished at 1.020, that is ABV of 9.2%. That is actually probably a good finishing gravity to cover the alcohol. I'm hoping it has a huge hop backbone to accompany the alcohol and final gravity. I think all will be well. Would love to have a taste of it some time. That sounds like my kind of IPA.

Yeah - lots of hops - Columbus, Glacier, and US Goldings for aroma.

I'm excited about trying it. It's the first batch using my new wort chiller, glass carboys, and using a secondary fermenter. Maybe I changed to many variables at once, but they all should result in better beer I would think.

I will bring some to the next meeting, unless it is really bad.

Sounds like you should have a well balanced Double IPA. I look forward to sampling some at a future meeting? I would be happy with 20 starting at 90. Curious to see how it all comes together.

I tried it a little early - had only been in the bottle 4 days. It wasn't nearly as hoppy as I had hoped. I will try another tommorrow (almost 2 weeks in the bottle) and see what I think. First impression is that it's not bad, but is unremarkable.
