Crystal hops

Post by hoboscratch »

Has anyone used Crystal hops with much regularity? I was doing some hop inventory and realized I had 3 oz of them. I have a recipe that calls for .25oz of them, not nearly enough to put a dent in my stash. Anyone know of any good recipes that call for Crystal? I see they are a good sub for Mt Hood, Hallertau, and Liberty. I'd also be willing to sell em if anyone has a need for em.

I'm admittedly primarily an American IPA/APA brewer so I don't know much about these hops. Not sure why I bought 4oz when my recipe called for .25 either...

This might be up your alley. Rogue Brutal bitter is a varietal beer using all crystal.

I've never had it, but it may be a good way to use up a chunk of hops

I like brutal bitter. In fact, bitters might be my favorite english style. No one ever makes them in the club, myself included.

I have a tasty ESB you might like. It's all EKG and Fuggles though. Second batch going right now with the Wyeast Yorkshire Square plat strain.

Hmm, don't think I've ever had that beer. Not sure I've even ever seen it here. I should go look at Benz to see if they have it.

Just read the recipe for Denny's Wry Smile Rye IPA which uses 3oz Mt Hood and some Columbus. I read that Crystal goes well with Columbus, I think I'll just sub that in and call it a beer!

That is what I was going to suggest. I seem to recall you or someone saying you like Boulder Beer's Hazed and Infused. That has Crystal, among other hops, towards the end of the boil and is dry-hopped with Crystal and Centennial.

Crystal hops

Someone (Jim Fuller) had an excellent ESB at the BrewBQ.

Probably my favorite British style, too.

Here is the recipe I used. No Crystal hops, I only used Fuggles, Northern Brewer and EKG, so it probably isn't what you are looking for. The only difference is the recipe was designed for 72% efficiency and I was achieving 80%+ which raised my starting gravity and I ended up with 8.0% ABV. Way too hot for an ESB, but it worked out well to my taste. (Save all text below to include the last "</RECIPES>" as a .XML file and you can import into BeerSmith. Not using BeerSmith? Why wouldn't you?):
