CAP Yeast Order

Post by DrPaulsen »

I'm going to order my yeast for the CAP club comp with one of these fancy insulated cold boxes from Midwest Supplies.

The description claims it will hold up to 12 White Labs vials or 6 Wyeast Activators. I'm going to order 2 WLP833 vials. If anyone else wants me to throw some yeast in the box, to guarantee it stays cold, let me know. I'm probably going to place an order early next week.

CAP Yeast Order

Is there a reason you're concerned about the temperature?  Is WLP833 more sensitive than average?

I've had noticeably better results from yeast that I keep cold from the time of purchase until I can store it in my fridge. Something I read from the Yeast book by Chris White & Jamil about yeast viability vs storage temp is sticking in my mind, but I can't point to a page or chart off the top of my head.

Since I want the CAP to be fairly delicate and clean, and I need to pitch a shit ton of yeast, I want it to be as viable as possible. Try comparing a 90% viable yeast vs a 30% viable yeast with the MrMalty.com calculator for a 1.049 lager. It makes a tremendous difference in the number of packets/vials to pitch and/or the size of the starter you need. I suppose one of these days I'll buy a microscope and build a mini microbiology lab so I can more accurately assess yeast viability, but that project is at least 2-3 years down the list.
