Templeton Rye

Post by JimPotts »

The Collins Road and Marion Hy-Vees have Templeton in stock (at least they did an hour ago).

At Collins Road, it's at the customer service desk. At Marion, you can ask at the liquor checkout.

Don't know if any of the others have it.

OK, I've tried Templeton and it really isn't that good. (Mind you nothing beats a good Irish whiskey!!) I haven't tried Cedar Ridge Whiskey yet but I am aging my own in one of their 1L barrels you can get at Hy-Vee. It has been two months and is still quite raw. I'll be shooting for a 6 month aging. Any thoughts??

Check your barrel. I bet it's low after 2 months. From personal experience it'll be at least half empty. That was with a good week soak to start and a daily roll once it was filled.

Templeton Rye

Irish whiskey is probably my least favorite style. I think Templeton is pretty tasty.
My first bottle, I had to stop myself from mixing it in eggnog. Good, but wasteful.

John, I second Tom's advice.

Almost all of my whiskey evaporated out of the mini barrel before it was ready. Given the similar experiences of several of us who actually paid attention to the instructions, I'd say that this experiment is flawed, primarily given the bad ratio of surface area to volume in such a small barrel.

When that came out, I thought an easier. less lossy, cheaper, and much much less cool way would be to pour it into a mason jar and add oak cubes.

On a side note, my brother in law keeps spotting Templeton at a Kum And Go up by Okoboji. He's gotten something like 4 or 5 bottles this year already and they still have some on the shelves. He's getting me a bottle for Xmas. Not regionally relevant, just interesting to me that they still have stock...

Another Templeton sighting (sorta like UFOs).

The HyVee Drug on 32nd St and Oakland Rd had 6 bottles on the shelf behind the checkout counters. I said "had" because I bought 2 of them tonight.

Didn't check the other night for Templeton (I was ogling the beer cooler), but the new Oakland Rd. HyVee store renovation is moving smartly along and the beer/wine/liquor section is now open and the shelves are stocked, so check there, too.

Target on B.F. has been getting two cases a week for the last few months. They only put out one or two bottles at a time so chances are they will have some in the back if you ask for it. Also, the Oakland HyVee had at least 15 bottles when I was there tonight.
