Brewing on January 2 around Noon *CANCELLED*

Post by Matt F »

Well there are a few bowl games on Monday, January 2nd this year and I thought I should brew and watch football. I brew inside so it will be warm. Heck, it has been warm outside lately. I plan to start grinding grain around 12 PM (formerly 11 AM). Feel free to stop by anytime during the brew session. I will probably close up shop around 6 PM to have dinner with the family. I am not doing anything formal for food so if you would like to bring a snack or beer to share that's cool. If not, that's cool too. All my taps are dry so I will be brewing an IPA as I need hops to survive.

For those not familiar with my system, it is a two tier all grain system with a pump, electric HLT, and gas burner for the boil kettle. I have some new parts to add from Christmas so I hope to have my HERMS/whirlpool immersion chiller in my HLT tank instead of my boil kettle. If so, I will be brewing in a different configuration than I am accustomed to, so come enjoy the show.

Directions can be found here.

What are you brewing? I wish I could make it. I'd already promised a buddy of mine we'd split a batch that day, so I'm booked.

Pretty much brewing a recipe for DANKness from Can You Brew It on the Brewing Network. I am going to use the same hops (Apollo, Summit, Citra, Simcoe) but changing the grain bill to a basic 2-row, munich and light british crystal that I like for most IPA's I have done. Also using WLP007 Dry English Ale yeast in place of WLP001 Cal Ale. Been using 007 for the last several batches and it has become my new house yeast.

Huh, that sounds pretty delicious. Who makes that? Have you used Apollo before? I was looking at those hops recently, contemplated buying some.

That's funny about the yeast, I have also been using the 007 a lot lately. I have used it on probably my past 3 or 4 ipa/apa recipes. I like the results a lot. Also I've been putting some Munich in a lot of recipes lately as well. I even put maybe a quarter pound or so into a wheat that I did recently, turned out awesome.

Not sure what I'm doing this weekend yet. Either a rye ipa, or might try an AB clone. I bought enough grain and Chinook hops for 2 batches of an AB attempt and some oak to try an oaked AB.

It was a homebrew recipe entered in the Pro-Am at GABF. They make it seasonally at Triple Rock in Berkley, CA. I have not had the beer but it sounds good. I have never used Apollo before but bought a pound pretty cheap from Niko Homebrew after listening to the podcast for the beer. I am curious to see how it turns out.

I throw a little Munich in about everything. I feel like it adds a nice maltiness.

I'm hoping to have time to stop by and see how your system works.

Had to bump back my start time a bit to noon. I have to pick up and deliver some meat from the Newhall Locker in the morning.

Sorry guys but I have to cancel. Wife spent the morning in the emergency room and has been regulated to the bed for the next few days. Hopefully another time.
