Hop Stoopid Throwdown

Post by kjball »

Anyone want to do this as a club contest? I know we talked about doing an Abrasive throwdown, and it never really got rolling. Who's in?

Bad people drink bad beer. You don't usually see an empty bottle of Rochefort tossed onto the side of the road

Whoa! 20 ppm O2 is a huge amount.

I've been looking for an excuse to make a Hop-Shot-based beer and would love to do this, but I will need a few months before my brewing calendar opens up.

Hop Stoopid Throwdown

You have to hand it to them, this is a brilliant stroke of marketing! Has any major craft brewery done this with NHC before? Very cool on their part.

I have everything for this except the Victory and the yeast. If someone wants to split an order from NB I'd be up for doing this. I enjoy doing stuff like this, and I think we should do this more often...

Count me in this sounds fun. I will have to make an order for some parts of this recipe as well.

OK, Let's decide on rules and present them at the next meeting. We need to figure out a turn-in time and criteria. As well as a judging format. I'm figuring that we will use the CYBI format from the brewing network.

What if one of us makes it better than the original?

that is actually my concern. Is the point going to be:
1 "who can get closest to the original?"
or
2 "who can make the best IPA using this recipe?"

I really think the spirit of the contest should be #1. Otherwise it just turns into an IPA contest. (Which would be awesome)

Why not do both?

Someone wins for having the closest clone.

Someone wins for best IPA.

I may be game depending on timing. We should discuss at the meeting and provide maybe a two month window or whatever we need to have a good level of participation.

This is starting to remind me of something I brought up last year but never followed through on. To have a mini-comp to see who can make the best beer with a set-in-stone ingredient, such as malt bill, and see who can make the best beer using their own hops/yeast combination. This is getting off base a bit from the original topic, something I've been getting good at lately, but after this mini-comp, I'd be up for another like the one I mentioned. Or just having regular clone challenges. Or a hop of the month challenge or anything along these lines.

Anyway I like Franklin's idea about having two winners. But I do think the "real" winner should be the one who clones the original the closest...
