An online petition is circulating to save the sledding hill at Thomas Park and sections of the Legion Park Disc Golf Course in Marion. The City of Marion is currently considering a land swap with a residential developer. Under the trade deal, the city park gains just over 4.5 acres in exchange for 1.3 acres.
Real estate is my business. These types of land exchanges with public parks set dangerous precedents. The general public may see that the park gets more land and think it is good. The key is land has more value than size. I have not seen what land they hope to exchange, but I do know the Thomas disc park is awesome and the sledding hill gets heavy use in the winter. The developer will be putting condos in their place.

This kind of thing really smacks of corruption. I agree with Matt that it may sound like a fair swap, but the land being taken away is very unique and high value to users. Plus, I hate when these developments encroach on public spaces. They already did this once to Thomas Park and it feels much more cramped now. Plus, it's not like there's a ton of available land around Marion that isn't just flood zones. What 4 acres of land is Marion supposed to gain for this deal? You just have to wonder how much money is being traded off the books for the city leaders to even consider this...

Unfortunately, land developers "own" the city leaders in most cities, and in Marion it tends to be even worse. I hope the petition helps.
