Cedar Rapids Beer Nuts Home Brew Festival

Post by brownbeard »

OK. I would like to keep discussion on this event in the members only section for now. Things are in a preliminary planning stage right now, and not meant for public consumption.

What we know:
Benz will be the sponsor, and backer of the event. We are not selling tickets, Benz is.
Date: Oct. 13th
Time: 2-6 (this would be after the away Iowa game ends)
Location: Benz
All proceeds will be donated to the Cedar Rapids Beer Nuts, by Benz

There are several things that need to be considered. For one, the volume of beer we need to supply is going to be significant. The number that keep coming up is 150 gallons. That is a lot. But, we have a lot of members now, I think we can do it. I will personally donate 2 kegs to this event.

We have also considered inviting MUGZ, Thirsty, and Craze to the event. This will help add beer, and will showcase home brew clubs other than us, in the area. This event is all about home brew. There will be no commercial beer. If we invite these clubs, we should make a donation from our proceeds.

We need a band. Nothing too heavy.

Since we are limiting to 500 people, we will not have to go beyond the boundaries of the Benz parking lot. The benefit to that is, we don't have to hire security, or pay city permits. This is all according to Matt at Benz, who has quite a bit of experience now. We will have to supply port 'o johns.

We will want to have a functioning brew demonstration on site.

We will allow a food vendor to set up shop, and sell food. This way we are not responsible for any food.

Glassware is an issue. I do not want to use pint glasses. I want us to have sample glasses, so we are pouring 1-2 oz. pours.

We have a lot to discuss, and we have to discuss it now. Folks, this is going to be a lot of work. But this has been a goal of the club for a while, I think we can make it happen, and I hope you guys are on board. This is a big deal, and I think it advances the scope of our club.

Lots to think about. Lots to talk about.

Sounds cool and a good time of year. I will donate two kegs. That's 25 gallons already. I think we can get to 150. We have about 17% already commited on day one!

I'll be happy to bring my brewing setup for a demo. I liked doing it for a crowd last time and I can guarantee it won't be as hot as Big Brew Day if it's in October.

I can contribute at least one, probably two. Should we consider divying up styles?( To make sure we don't get 100 gallons of IPA. )

I'm up for a couple kegs. I agree we need to cover as broad a spectrum of beers as possible.

I'll do 2 half-kegs: an American Stout and either a smoked porter or Scottish ale.
