Club Barrel project
Club Barrel project
Since Jeremy is moving, we need to get the club barrel out of his basement right away. We'll probably discuss this more at the BBQ comp Saturday, but in case you can't attend we'll try to keep details posted here.
Those who contributed beer have first dibs on getting beer back out. Since we need to complete empty it to move it, you can take more than your "share" if there is enough to go around. Ideally, we'd like to store 10-15 gallons for club events. For that to happen someone will need to lend us empty kegs. If we have beer left after these then we'll let anyone else in the club take some.
We'll have a sign-up sheet at the BBQ event, but if you can't make it please post here if you want beer, how much if any you contributed, and if you can lend any kegs to the club.
I think Jim has agreed to host the barrel. We'll need at least 3-4 strong backs to help get it out of Jeremy's basement and into it's new home. We'll likely try to do that when we get together to empty it. Let's try to make this as easy and trouble-free for Jeremy as we can.
We'd also like to thank Jeremy for his work on coordinating the project thus far and for taking care of the barrel. I think everyone would agree that's it's been a big success.
Finally, we'll need to start planning the next beer project to go in the barrel. We'll want to re-fill it as soon as we can. We're taking suggestions for beer styles first, then we'll vote and then take recipe suggestions.

i vote for an imperial oak aged malt liquor. due to alcohol strength we should serve in 32 oz bottles rather than 40s.

I have plenty of empty kegs, I can house the "club share" for festivals. I would also like whatever share i have in there, and want in on the next next one too. As far as styles go anything that isn't sour. If we want to sour the barrel, I'm all for it, but I would like to see at least one more non-sour go through first. Just my 2c.
Bad people drink bad beer. You don't usually see an empty bottle of Rochefort tossed onto the side of the road
I'm in for helping empty the barrel. At one point it was discussed that contributors would get 2.5 gal back. Is that still the case? Also I should be free most anytime in the next few weeks...I could stop by some night as well, Jeremy, if that works. I will be at the State Fair thei Saturday but good any other time.

I put in ten gallons so I am supposed to get back 5. If there is more that needs a home, I don't mind getting more. Just want to make sure those that donated get a chance to get their half back first. My schedule is pretty full so I will try to make it whenever folks think they will get together. If I can't make it I will drop off a couple kegs.
As far as the smoked porter, I have a version in a 15 gallon Cedar Ridge Bourbon barrel right now that has been in since February. It is stronger than most of my batches at 8.4% ABV and is REALLY smokey. I will keg that soon and bring some to a meeting so folks can sample. You are welcome to use the recipe for the barrel if you like it. Nice thing about the beer is if its too smokey, it is an easy fix with less smoked malt in the grain bill. Also, the smoke tends to mild after extended aging.
