Cedar Rapids water

Post by TappedOut »

I just got the CR water dept to send me a water report, so I can tinker w/ my mash water. Thought I'd post it here if anyone else is interested. Enjoy!

Thanks Tom, I do like to see if much as changed year to year. It would be cool if someone that understood water chemistry well would make a presentation or write about what they do in one of our future news letters. All I do at this point is add campden tablets to get rid of Chlorine and Chloramines. I want to start tinkering with my brew water this year.

Yep, campden tablets are all I do now, too. According to John Palmer's water spreadsheet, it's ideally suited for 8-13 SRM brews without tinkering.

We have some good chemistry folks at the nuke plant. As you might guess, we're REALLY picky about the water in the reactor! It's as close to theoretically pure water as you can make. I will print off this report and see what I can find out from them.

Since I got back in the brewing mode, I have used filtered water. We have an undersink GE system with separate tap for drinking water. It definitely gets out almost all of the chlorine (a death sentence to good coffee!). Since it's target is organics, it should be getting most of the Nitrates/Nitrites out too. I will check their website about hardness, pH, etc.
