Some Iowa Boys win the Jack

Post by tony b »

LYNCHBURG, Tenn. (October 27, 2012) – Pig Skin BBQ from Rockwell, Iowa, claimed the title of Grand Champion at the 24th Annual Jack Daniel’s World Championship Invitational Barbecue held in Lynchburg Tenn., on Saturday October 27.

As Grand Champion, Pig Skin BBQ received $5,000, braggin’ rights as winner of the most prestigious barbecue contest in the world and the chance to come back in 2013 to defend their title.

“It’s amazing. It’s by far the best thing we’ve ever done barbecue-wise. It’s crazy—makes it all worthwhile,” said Scott Nelson, chief cook of Pig Skin BBQ.

Which is more prestigious? The Jack Daniels or the American Royal?

Yeah, BUTT (pun intended) - to score high at both the Jack and Am Royal, you have to cook all four requireds - pulled pork, ribs, brisket and chicken!

That's what makes it so impressive. You can't just cook one well, you have to do them all well; and as most of us Q'ers know, they are all different in how you prep and cook them.

I'm not sure that I'll ever be THAT good, unless I quit my job and do it full time!! :D

Someday. I am going to BBQ for my living. I may never make any noise at the Royal, but I intend to cook there.

Another interesting story on this year's Jack; the team that took 1st in Chicken, did all their cooking on a Kamado, like my old grill (currently residing at Steven's place)!!

The new owners of the company have changed the name to Kamado Rocket to put some distance between themselves and the previous owner, who was well known for ripping folks off!

Their web site is still pretty much the same though. I'll have to give them another shot at selling me the collar repair kit.
