Couple of questions....

Distilling isn't that far off the beaten path of home brewing. Has anyone here built a still for water or extracting "essential oils"? I know that production of ethyl alcohol is illegal although Jerry from the Brew Haus told me an ATF guy told him they dont care about personal stills..... if anyone has one I would like to check it out.

And, how can I get my dues turned in?

Not that this answers your question. I have a small still that I purchased many years back. The easystill http://easystillshop.com check it out. It is a nice little pot still. Not sure what type of still you are looking for whether Pot or Reflux, most people who are looking to make whiskey's and similar liqours use pot stills as they produce a better flavored product. Reflux stills are better at producing neutral spirits for use with essenses.

It is a nice little unit that holds a gallon and produces roughly a fifth of liqour per gallon assuming you are producing a wash that is about 10% abv. if you are interested in persuing. Check it out, great way to start if you are interested, don't cost much and are extremely safe. I also purchased a 10 gal stainless steel milk can to build one, but, have not gotten to it yet as I am busy building my brewing rig.

Also check out the practical distiller at the following location.

http://manybooks.net/titles/mcharrys2125221252-8.html

It is available in many formats and is free. While published a long time ago, the concepts are still the same as they were then.

I've been thinking about rigging up a steam distillation setup at home, and have setup a couple reflux stills at work. They are fairly simple.

That little still looks interesting, however a couple must haves for any distillation apparatus is a properly placed thermometer (so you know what your getting), and some method to condense the vapors (especially if the vapors are flammable).

This gets me thinking, would it be cheaper to distill my own water vs $0.40/gallon?

Regarding dues - check with Potties to see if our PAYPAL is fixed. You can pay that way or mail him a check.
