Best yeast for an IPA?

Post by Steven P »

I'm looking for your opinions on the best IPA yeast. I'm planning out a New Zealand IPA to brew next month for early spring drinking.

The Wyeast 1335 British Ale II made for a great Furious and S-05 is kind of a standard. Any other suggestions?

Best yeast for an IPA?

Post by DrPaulsen »

I've heard great things about WLP090 San Diego Super Yeast, but have not personally tried it.  I plan to use it in a Union Jack clone after I get through 3 more lagers.

WLP090 is a very clean yeast. Its quick, and has a narrow temperature range. My first attempt at it was too cold~60 and the yeast flocculated before it was finished and ended taking more time to finish than I expected. Looking more into the yeast, it generates a lot of heat so temperature can't be too hot, either.

Overall I like it. just stick closer to 65-67F range.

I have WLP090 San Diego Super Yeast that I just got because Midwest didn't have my regular WLP001 Cali yeast, I haven't used it yet but I assume it should work for my IPAs and other ales.

I've got WLP090 and WLP001 on stock pretty much all the time because so many folks use them and really like the results.
Cheers!

I have never used the San Diego Super yeast. Post here more if you have some experience with it. I would like to play with it sometime. WLP 007 has been my house yeast including IPA for about 3 years. I need to sart playing with yeasts some more. Other than all the sour bugs I have been throwing around lately.
