Homebrew Tasting and Beer Appreciation at Red's Alehouse
The Beer Nuts and Red's Alehouse have decided to partner together and provide another unique event series in Eastern Iowa. We're going to start once a month, most likely the 3rd Monday, and do homebrew beer tasting and beer appreciation sessions. We're thinking of starting around 6pm.
We'll need a couple of people each month to volunteer to bring some of their delicious home brewed beer to serve Red's staff and patrons. The goal is to get the Beer Nuts some exposure as well has to help educate others on the wide range of beer experiences.
We'd like to keep things diverse, to provide a better experience for everyone. Beers on a given night can be of the same or similar style (even encouraged), but we don't want to have the same or similar beers month to month.
In addition, we'd like to do some special seasonal styles so that Red's staff can hopefully learn to compare commercial examples and better talk about them. For example, we'll want to try Maibocks this Spring. We'll try to give many month's notice on these as some beers take extended lagering or conditioning time.
This is going to be a work in progress while we figure out the best way to do this so bear with us. For now, I'll be starting separate threads to sign up for each month. Please post if you would like to bring beer, and what kind of beer you'd like to bring. Depending on how many people sign up, the board and Red's may select from the list. Again, the goal is to provide the best experience, and pairing beers together will be of higher value.
This is not a competition, so while we want to show off our skill, beers are not being judged. Obviously, don't bring beer with big or obvious flaws.
This should be a lot of fun!

It kind of depends on who/what participates. We'd like between 5-10 gallons per session, with at least two beers ideally. But 2-3 gallons would work if someone else is bringing a keg of five, or if 3 people bring partials. If they are big beers then we woundn't need as much either, as we'd be doing smaller pours.

It wasn't a bad time. I think Red's needs to put a little more effort into it if they want us to continue.
I admit the local beer community owes a thank you to Red's Alehouse, but the beer community in CR has made great strides in recent years.
We owe Bricks, Third base, and Parlor City.
I think our wheelhouse is CR proper. If we want to increase membership and craft beer in general we need to focus on increasing our local presence.

I was at Red's yesterday and asked Bill how he thought it went. He said for a first time experiment, it went well. He said that he'd reserve final judgment until after the second one to see if it continued or need to be modified in some way for the longer haul.
My impression, their initial enthusiasm has waned. We'll just see how the next one goes.

My take on it was we were much more interested in being there, than they were in having us.
It wasn't promoted, the wait staff didn't want to tell anybody we were in the back room, and only a couple trays of samples were distributed.
Kent, Randy, Dan and I were money. We poured, we answered questions, and we did what we could.
The winning ticket may be when they open the patio, and they could stick us in an outdoor corner.
I'm not totally against the idea of us doing the Red's thing again. The deck was stacked against us. No promotion. First run. No exposure when we were there.
