Benz Bvg Depot will host CR Rollergirl Brew Contest

Post by lemmeadam55 »

I have confirmed with Matt at Benz that he is willing to host a beer tasting of all your brews should you choose to participate in our upcoming event, "The making of the official Home Brew of the Cedar Rapids Roller Girls."

We are asking all local home brew experts (and novice,) to compile a brew specially made for the Cedar Rapids Roller Girls that will encompass the flavors and aroma of fish nets, short skirts, rough play and sisterhood!

The plan is to have several different brews for us to taste from to decide a winner. We also want to invite the outside public as well for People's Choice. Due to the legalities; we are limited to serving the winning brew at private parties/events, (non-commercial,) and would like the opportunity to advertise the winner as our very own brew; Giner Shiner.

Since it takes about 6 weeks to brew, Matt and I agreed Mid-october will be the best time to do this. We are shooting for a Thursday night; so I wanted to know what works best for all of you?

Thursday October 8th or 15th? Matt said it'll probably be about a 1 1/2 - 2hr spot.

Please get back to me as soon as possible as I would like to present the possible dates to Matt before he leaves on vacation the first week of August. Once we get the details in order, I will supply you with registration forms for each type of beer entered into the tasting.

Benz Bvg Depot will host CR Rollergirl Brew Contest

Post by Mr T »

I would think the late the better as some beers take a considerable time to age, especially if they want it to taste like fish net and aqua net. Many of us would need time to figure a time to brew, ferment and age.

A few questions..

How much beer to bring
How to dispense, this keg or bottle?
Do they name it or do we?
What is the compensation, as brewers or at least I don’t typically want to give all their beer away.
Is someone else brewing this and we just provide the recipe, a question for those brewers with grandma’s home secret made recipe.
How is this event going to be presented, is it going to be another event where you have to pay ten bucks to get in?
If this is for private parties, why is the public there to vote on the brew?

Sounds like fun, thanks for the info.

Travis

Questions Answered

Post by lemmeadam55 »

I don't necesarily want it to TASTE like aqunet or fishnets! The girls enjoy a variety of beers from the dark to the light, fruity to chocolaty and everything in between. Brew what you think is fitting for a tough gal - not a prissy princess;-)

How much beer to bring - I would say a small keg
How to dispense, this keg or bottle? Either/or - we will be tasting from glasses.
Do they name it or do we? The winning brew we would like to name "giner Shiner We could design a label and eventually bottle if if the winner decides to do so. Not sure of legalities with selling it; we'd like to be able to at our bouts or afterparties, but this is all preliminary brainstorming! Immediately, however - the winner will be awarded bragging rights they have the fave brew of the CR Rollergirls.
What is the compensation, as brewers or at least I don’t typically want to give all their beer away. - No compensation; just good ol recognition. It would be an expense to brewers; but at the cost of being able to share your makings and enjoy the experience with us.
Is someone else brewing this and we just provide the recipe, a question for those brewers with grandma’s home secret made recipe. No, this is YOUR recipe, YOUR rights to it. We are utilizing the resources available to us to market our upcoming bouts and provide a unique type of entertainment to our fan base.
How is this event going to be presented, is it going to be another event where you have to pay ten bucks to get in? That is still in negotiation, Matt wants me to find out the preliminary info, i.e. amount of interest from home brewers, etc. If there is a charge, the rollergirls would like to donate proceeds to a charity. That all depends on the legalities of selling a home brew, what we work out with Matt and demand.
If this is for private parties, why is the public there to vote on the brew? Marketing. Invite the public to share in the tradition...market for new members in your club; socialize and network. The Rollergirls will vote within the league our choice; and there will be (in addition to,) people's choice. This awards you bragging rights;-)
We would like to have raffles, prizes, etc. It was a unique idea a few of us have been interested in pursuing, and simply thought it would be fun to do! We totally understand if the brewers feel the expense is not worth it.

First off, I realize you didn’t want it to taste like aquanet or fishnets, but then again I’ve never tasted aquanet…  Just know it was going take some time to compile a recipe, brew and age and wanted to set reasonable expectations as many of the events we participate in, we start planning months in advance or even the year before.

Also since unless we rent/buy a commercial building, obtain license to brew on the premise and another license to distro then we certainly can’t sell this, and I know you or us don’t want to boot leg anything. My concern was not for beer at the actual judging but how much work and cost it would be for the brewer to be producing beer for future events and parties at their expense. I don’t think many mind to let folks sample, but was just trying to picture the future of this brew and how much bragging rights will overlook the time, cost and commitment. I didn’t want to see you pick a winner, and the winner only wanted to win but not commit to brewing, promoting and participating in the future giner shiner.

I certainly like the idea of a good competition and I certainly support the roller girls, and even more so would luv to see better beers at the events because they even pulled off bud select the last time I was at the derby which leaves me with bud light all night. I just want to set reasonable expectations for both the roller girls and the brewers and make sure the cr beer nuts understands what they are brewing for if they choose to participate and the roller girls realize the obstacles (dues Nazi) that lay ahead if they have big plans for this brew.

I’ll email u my info if you want to chat further and I can bring it up at the next cabinet meeting or brew meeting

I agree with Travis in that home brewers cannot sell their beer without having a commercial brewing license, building, equipment, etc., so providing beer beyond the one competition will not really be plausible unless someone wanted to make a huge time and financial committment without any compensation. Due to health department regulations, I also doubt that homebrew could be sold at a public event. Although I too support the roller girls and am all for an official beer for them, it would not be possible for one of us to provide it on a regular basis. We already participate in two or three beer events a year in which we donate beer for charity and it is getting pretty tough to get club members to committ to any more than that due to time/cost considerations. I'd be happy to enter some beer in a friendly competition, but it's not feasible to do anything beyond that. Sorry to be a downer, but it just might not be possible. We'd be happy to discuss it further over a beer. Let us know.

Thank you all for your feedback regarding the Roller Girl beer. After discussion of your information with the board, we have decided not to pursue this beer contest any further. We look forward to an opportunity in the future to enjoying your brews at Benz's annual beerfest!
