Wanted - Uncut keg

Post by czubak »

Long term project, so no big rush, but this would be a bottom drain MT or BK. I have (legally) acquired one already and would like find another.

I'd eventually like a keg for a boil pot, but only for, say $60 or less...

I have previously bought kegs from Marion Iron for kettle making. Haven't been there since they moved, but it's worth keeping an eye on their stainless pile.

Still looking for kegs. Haven't been looking too hard, but might have sourced a second so I need to find one more. Prefer uncut still.

I scored one, but could really use a second one too. I love the first one turned into a keggle.. they aren't the easiest things to find, apparently...

I hate keggles and how bulky they are, but I'm sold on bottom drain and this is the cheapest way to accomplish this. I've scored #2 and have #3 lined up if it's still around when I get back from vacation.

Fred I've got all my legs lined up for my project and can get another that the tops cut off very poorly for next to nothing from a friend and there is a guy that has one FS on the board that's no long brewing with two welded ports, ball valve and hop spider for $100 firm.

Do you really want a bottom drain for the boil kettle? Typically that's where all the proteins and hop sludge ends up.

I guess there would be a benefit if you put a 2 inch butterfly valve in the bottom for cleaning only...

Nothing a false bottom can't fix. Maybe I'm wrong.

I'm fairly cheap. So I did see the $100 one listed here and it has stuff I don't need or want on it. Not saying that a Blichmann Thermometer isn't worth that much but I use PTC sensors (at $4 each and I calibrate a PID used as a temp display myself, on a HLT I'd be temped to close the loop and go BIAB but we will see)... At $100, I might just as well buy a new 15 gallon kettle...

At some point I'd like a second one for a HLT (electric). The one I built up is going to be converted to electric boil when I have time to start brewing again (which might be Christmas the way I am going). I finally cleaned out my garage with a 20 yd dumpster and the brewing stuff is going inside for good soon.

They are bulky but I do like the handles on the top, etc.. so I lean towards that being the trade off for being so substantially built. They fit on a hand truck fairly well, so I move them around that way...

But if one turns up in the $35-50 (depending on quality) range again I would be game...
