2016 Tech Meeting #2 - Barrel Experiment - March 8
2016 Tech Meeting #2 - Barrel Experiment - March 8
NOTE: It's official, our booking for LB has been confirmed. Laura will host us once again.
On Tuesday, March 8th, Pat McCusker will present a Tech Meeting on the Barrel Experiment at Lion Bridge Brewing Company. This is a follow-on meeting of Pat's discussion of Melomels, at the February Tech Meeting.
While this event is not open to the public, members may bring guests with them.
Please respond to this post if you plan to attend, with the number attending if you are not attending alone, so that we can estimate our attendance count.
Agenda
7PM Doors open
7-7:30 PM Gathering, set-up; Lion Bridge Pours Available - however the kitchen will be closed
7:30 PM Presentation Begins
Teardown, clean-up, and out the door no later than 9:30 PM.
About the presentation:
This meeting covers the effects of barrel aging and the different results from new and old barrels. I made a 25-gallon batch of cyser (honey and apple juice) which was aged, 3 gallons at a time, in a 3-gallon American oak barrel (medium toast). I essentially turned a new barrel into an old barrel by aging five separate 3-gallon batches in the barrel. Samples of each batch were bottled separately as well as a blend of all the batches. Many samples will be available.
About the presenter:
Patrick McCusker. I have been making meads and melomels since 2003; wine since 2008; beer since 2013; and cider since 2014. Most of my focus is on historical brewing (my wife and I are members of the Society for Creative Anachronism). I do occasionally enter products in formal competitions. I took 2nd place in the sweet mead category at the Mazer Cup International 5 or so years ago. And one year, I took 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, and tied for 7th out of 35 entries in the mead division at the Iowa State Fair.

unfortunately, I'd say there's about a 5% chance that I can attend that date/time.
Edit: changed to a 90% chance

Again, I will put it on my calendar. I had a conflict and when I got to the conflict the reason I "had to go there" was delayed. I wish I would blown that off and seen Pat...
I should be able to make it next time...
