Greetings fellow Beer Nuts.... it is April and Helles is in the air!

I will be taking submissions for this quarter's competition at this Thursday's meeting.

Guidelines, with regard to the physical appearance of your submissions, stipulate that your bottle and caps do not contain any unique naming/markings - so that your submission has no unique identifications. So, you should not use bottles that contain wording associated with a specific brewery, such as the Sam Adams bottles - most of them contain an embossed version of the Sam Adams signature. Similarly with bottle caps, they should be uniform or made uniform.

For example, there are bottle caps you can buy from BIY that are black, but have a Gold capital B. Generally, those could be acceptable, but you can take a black magic marker to fill-in the B, and make the caps look uniformly black.

We've not been picky about this, but it really boils down to two different entries that are equal and really fantastic beers - the difference in the final score could come down to the details of the submission.

If you have a submission, but cannot attend this Thursday's meeting, please Private Message me, and we will make arrangements to get you beer in the running.

Cheers,
Daryl

Hey Daryl,

I got the black capped nondescript long neck bottle thing, but how many 12 oz bottles do we typically need to enter? Is it a bad idea to then share that same beer at the meeting? Or do we really care because the stakes are simply so high and all? I counter pressure bottled 8 last night but I'm planning on giving a couple to a buddy of mine. And it's a PITA to do.

Thanks,

Fred

For those who have not judged before we typically use 1 bottle for the 1st round and the 2nd round is typically used for best of show or to break ties

No no no. The second bottle of the winning beer should always come to me for "verification"! :)

Okay, thanks. I think I entered two last time, or maybe three.. I dunno.. looking at guidelines for external competitions I see it varies widely. Thanks.

Hopefully I'll do alright.. it's not a style I actually like a lot (so my palate isn't in tune with it really) but I took it as a challenge to validate all of my equipment finally coming together. Stir plate for adequate pitching rate for lagers (i.e. massive), STC-1000+ ferm chamber, and hot side step mashing, PID controlled. I should have tried a decoction mash too but I didn't want to risk too many variables at once. I think I will next time. Boiling the grains scare me, but I understand why it's not the same issue as doing it in a thin mash.

Fun Stuff.. see y'all on Thursday night...
