Anyone need/want apples?

Post by czubak »

New neighbor has an acre lot and 5 apple trees and said we could have all we wanted. He knows the varieties and one or two were red delicious IIRC

I know Lee has a press and you've done this in the past. I'd be willing to get it all set up if there was interest and we could make a day of it at my place.

I'd put a half day or a day to collect and press apples, if we can get access to a press.
In the Fridge/On Tap: English Bitter, Schwarzbier, Cream Ale
In the keg: Wheat Beer, Russian Imperial Stout
In the bucket:
In the queue: Irish Red, American IPA

Nick S. built a hydraulic press and motorized his grinder a couple months back, and asked me to keep an eye out for apples.
He and I would likely be interested.

They guy I have bought apples from in the past called me over the weekend. The apples are harvesting about 3 weeks early this year. So he is starting to pick apples that make pretty good cider.

I told him that I am not making cider this year, but I have friends that are interested. He said he would offer the same deal I got for anyone that bought at least a couple of bushels. These are "2nd quality" apples, meaning they have blemishes or other minor defects that do not affect the juice or the fruit (my wife and I have been making apple sauce with the 2nd quality apples). These are going for 25 cents a pound or 10 bucks for a 40-lb bushel box.

Spartan is picking now. The grower (Darin) thinks he has 10 bushels of 2nd quality Spartans on the tree. Spartan is a child of Macintosh and makes a really nice, white-wine-like cider. Haralson will be picking in a couple of weeks and Rhode Island Greening about the same time. These are three of the apple that I really like to use for my ciders. He has another dozen or so types of apples available.

Call Darin directly on his cell phone at 641-210-5506. Give my name to get the special pricing. Give him a day or two of notice, and he will pick them, clean them, and box them so they are ready for pick-up.

Enjoy.
