Burners

Post by daryl »

This past weekend's crushing experience has me in the market for a new burner.

I need something sturdy and something that will bring water to a boil faster.

Any recommendations?
In the Fridge/On Tap: English Bitter, Schwarzbier, Cream Ale
In the keg: Wheat Beer, Russian Imperial Stout
In the bucket:
In the queue: Irish Red, American IPA

My buddy just got a Bayou Classic KAB4. The thing is a beast, boils wort very quickly, ample gas output.

Heats pretty fast.

Blichmann has a brand new burner that looks awesome!

Check out the stuff from Anvil too.

I use a Hurricane Burner. Just bought the burner for my brew stand for about $30 so cannot speak to how the stand it can comes with works. Burner is great.

Do not get a Jet burner, get the ring style with all the little holes. If you can hook up to natural gas, well that is just great! I don't miss swapping propane tanks and if you brew in the basement definitely use natural gas. It is lighter than air and naturally floats up to your exhaust. Propane is heavier and can pool in your basement which equals BOOM! I brewed for years with 35k btu and it worked fine for 10 gallons. I would recommend more but for 10 gallons though. Key was to start the burner once you have 5 gallons of wort in the kettle while fly sparging. By the time the sparge was done you are usually ready to boil. No waiting.

I agree with all of this. Get any one of the large ring burners. Quiet as ever and put out a ton of heat and are more efficient than the load jet burners by a substantial margin

I have the Blichmann top tier on natural gas, which lowers the rating down to 60K BTU, but still puts out some heat. I only do 6 - 7 gal boils, so I can't speak to how long it would take to boil a larger batch. Another add-on is the taller legs. I have them. They are typical Blichmann - sturdy.

That new burner looks like a beast, indeed. Didn't say if you could hook it up to natural gas or not?

I am sure it can be run on NG, just need an orifice.

My old system was the large burners on low pressure propane and it had zero issues with bringing 11+ gallons to ta boil.

Blichmann Hellfire floor mount.....does anyone know if the floor mount version will scorch my deck? Or will I need a heat shield underneath?

Thanks for all of the great feedback gents.

Nor sure if you need a heat shield, but a piece of aluminum or a tile would probably get the job done.

Lee uses his Blichmann (older model) on his brew table and no legs and it's been working fine for years.

Will be curious to see what kind of heat that monster throws out.
