We will likely need to change our club name
Re: We will likely need to change our club name
Cost to file is a non issue. I discovered our current non-profit status expired a while ago. The registration was not maintained. We have to refile anyway.

Re: We will likely need to change our club name
While I was mowing lawn today I discussed this with Taco. While we don't think the parody route is the best use, if we do it we need to make it count.andrewmaixner wrote:Cedar Rapids Brew Nuts, keep the same logo image (change two letters), and no possibility of infringement any more.
Our logo is very different from the trademark, aside from the two words. They hold TM on a red circle outline with the words Beer Nuts written in red on a transparent background. Ours is a red bottlecap with the club name written in white (or negative) on a red background.
We could also change the sub-text (""good times, great beer"") to something slightly different (or more inclusive of non-beer stuff) also if desired, but, a Google image search does not show that part as being used by the company on their stuff currently...
That would 100% remove any possibility of being sued for infringement, while retaining a lot of our club's "brand" recognition.
Perhaps 'Cedar Rapids Beer Eunuchs ' with the slogan: "We had nuts, but they were removed". calling out who removed them for us could put us in defamation issues larger than the current issues we are having.
Or Cedar Rapids Beer Fanatics . or another word to describe how much we love beer.
The guy who submitted a barley wine in the Furious competition...

We could go all in on diversity:
Cedar Rapids Brewers, Mazers, and Vinters (CR-BMV)

I agree diversity in fermentation is a good thing. How about Cedar Rapids Area Fermentation Troop (CRAFT)?

Re: We will likely need to change our club name
I like it, but my wife brings up a good point: most everyday people looking for us aren't going to know "fermentation" without some context clues. Should have home-brew/home-wine making or along those lines in there.karl wrote:I agree diversity in fermentation is a good thing. How about Cedar Rapids Area Fermentation Troop (CRAFT)?

Beat me to the punch, Karl. I'd come up with Cedar Rapids Area Fermenters Taming Yeast (CRAFTY).karl wrote:I agree diversity in fermentation is a good thing. How about Cedar Rapids Area Fermentation Troop (CRAFT)?

CRAFTY is good too.
Also, Rapids Area Fermentation Fanatics (RAFF), but I haven't thought of words to put in front to make RIFF-RAFF.

I like the Cedar Rapids Brew Nuts, it covers all the bases, wouldn't be too confusing, and should appease the Beer Nuts people.

They won a lawsuit against a company that used Brew Nuts. They were direct competitor in same industry though.

Re: We will likely need to change our club name
Would almost have to get something in writing from the company to use Brew Nuts as a name/ logo (being its so simular and from the previous nut producer infringement) so we are not doing this all over Again later, wouldn't you guys think?

Re: We will likely need to change our club name
Matt brought a good one last night I really liked.....The Cedar Rapids Brewers Society (CRBS).
Because that is kind of classy.........Our unofficial motto could be....."We put the BS in CR"!!!!
An official motto of any name we select could be
"Brew as much fun as you want" or "We brew as much fun as we want" or "We Brew Fun" ..... if the word fun is too juvenile ...... "We Enjoy What We Brew" or "Enjoy What We Brew"
They are not very snazzy, but a motto along those lines reflects what we are as a club.....we enjoy what we do, we have fun doing it....and for that last shot, we have fun and share generously what we brew.
Just thinking out loud......Keep posting your ideas here and/or bring them to the meeting next week.
