2018-02 February Meeting Minutes
Cedar Rapids Beer Nuts
General Meeting Minutes
2018 February 15
Meeting was called to order at 8:07 pm with President Matt Franklin presiding. Approximately 30 members and 5 guests were in attendance.
Old Business
Name Change and Rebranding
A final vote by show of hands was taken to approve accepting ‘Cedar Rapids Brewing Society’ (CRBS) as the new club name. The name was accepted with a clear majority in excess of two thirds of the members signifying ‘aye’ votes.
The next step is to begin getting graphic design work underway. The consensus is to likely maintain the bottle cap design but improve it for visibility and recognizability.
Plan is to have legal paperwork, brand strategy and graphics completed in time for a public relaunch coordinated with the Benz Beer Festival in May.
Club Competitions
Watch the club forums for details and announcements.
January - Winter Seasonal (30C) Judging was held this week over a field of eight entrants: 3rd place to Randy Carris, 2nd place to Steven Prohaska, and 1st place to Mark Jensen.
April - Dunkles Weissbier (10B)
July - Czech Pale Lager (3A)
October - American Amber (19A)
Wort Rally with Lion Bridge Brewing
Daryl was proud to announce that our wort can be an AHA sanctioned event if we follow certain rules with respect to advertising, openness to all, and fairness of judging. Consensus of the cabinet was to proceed with making this a sanctioned event.
The wort rally will also be conducted as a path to the Great American Beer Festival Pro-Am competition.
Wort pickup will likely be April 20 (4/20: I wonder what Matt will brew....)
Judging will likely be in early July.
“Bunged” Competition
Theme for this year is no hops.
Turn-in for judging will be at the September General Meeting.
Feature and People’s Choice will be at the September Happy Hour at Lion Bridge Brewing.
McCusker's Mad Mead Melee Competition
Turn-in is at the March general meeting.
Pat will be looking for judges to assist.
New Business
Membership Logistics
A roster of membership is legally required and will help us maintain better communication with our members. Roster will include name, phone number, email, and preferred means of social media contact.
A sign up register was passed around at the meeting. Members that did not get to sign it are asked to contact one of the cabinet members to complete registration.
Grain Order
This has been arranged with Iowa Brewing Company again this year.
A list of available malts and pricing has been posted on the forums. Base malts only; please support our local homebrew supply store, BIY Homebrew, for other ingredients and supplies.
Payment of the cost of the grain plus $3 shipping per bag was due upfront at time of order at the February General meeting. This is intended to speed logistics at pickup and keep the club from floating the cost of your grain.
Pickup is required on the day of delivery to Iowa Brewing Company. They cannot store your grain.
Watch the forum and social media for an announcement of when the grain is to arrive.
Participation Awards
Cabinet agreed that five $50 gift cards to BIY will be given in recognition of participation in the 2017 happy hour pourings at Lion Bridge Brewing.
Selection of the five awardees was be made by random drawing. The awardees are Mark Jensen, Josh Peanasky, Pat McCullough, Cal Corrin, and Lee Paulsen.
Benz Festival
Will likely be held the Saturday before Mother’s Day (May 12) again this year.
Members are invited to begin brewing beer to serve at the fest.
Upcoming Meetings
The cabinet agreed that the location of cabinet meeting should be that of the next month’s general meeting when logistically possible.

Yes, you are right. April turn-in is Dunkles Weissbier and March is McCusker's Mad Mead Melee.
That's an error that hasn't been caught for months....
Thanks.

Bunged Comp.
I wasn't there, so forgive me if rules were already stated at the meeting.
Does this mean it has to be a "brew"(beer), or just any alcoholic beverage with no hops ie. Cider, mead, wine ect.
Thanks

The challenge of Bunged 2 is to craft a great beer without the use of hops.
I will post the competition's judging criteria soon and that should help clear things up.

Re: 2018-02 February Meeting Minutes
the Benz festival is usually in May and so is Mother's Day. May 13th is Mother's day, so is Benz fest on May 12th?
Who has the $50 gift certificate to BIY for participating the Happy Hours? I will be at the Happy Hour on February 25th if they can bring it then.
