CRBS/Wilson Orchard Cider Rally 2019-2020

Post by daryl »

Not too many details to share, but this is what I know at this point, and I would like a show of interest....

Sometime in October, we would get an Orchard walk-thru at Wilson's, which could be combined with an apple macerating and juicing event. That would culminate in buying 5 gallons (maybe multiple 5 gallons) of cider for between $25-$35. We would likely provide our own buckets.

Brewers take the cider, brew a cider, age the cider, and then return to Wilson's Orchard (or maybe it will be somewhere else) sometime in the late Spring/early Summer for a tasting event and a people's choice voting event. Much like how our Wort Rally started.

The folks at Wilson Orchard are very excited about this event....how about you?

If you would be interested in participating in these two events, please respond to this post, and tell me if you are:
Somewhat Interested.
Very Interested.

Cheers,
D

I'm at least somewhat interested. But it would need to be after the first week of October. The 19th and 20th would also be out for me.

My interest would be limited to picking up 5 gallons of cider. October and November are bow season, my free time is spent in a tree.

I would be slightly interested in picking up cider (5gal)
Work schedule in October is crazy for me, so it would depend on weekend for pick up. Probably wouldn't be able to swing the juicing/ walk through event.

Have they given any indication of what the blend of apples will be? Are they just giving the juice they normally sell for regular consumption? Or will it be the juice they use for cider?

Either way, I am in. But it would be nice to know.

I'm in. Only dates in October that are out for me are the 5th and the 26th.

That is still to be discussed. I think we could have the option of picking apples...and they have quite a few varieties that should be available at that time of year.

I am not particularly interested in picking apples.

I assumed we would be picking up juice they were already in the process of pressing. I don't think they are set up to deal with a few hundred pounds of apples at a time.

Just got off the phone with Alex from Wilson Orchard (she poured for Wilson's Orchard at Drink Local) and this event is a go!

Who: Co-hosts - Wilson's Orchard/Rapid Creek Cidery and the Cedar Rapids Brewing Society

What: First Annual Cider Rally - cider to process will be sold at $7/gallon or $30/5-gallons; the exact varieties of apples to be used will depend upon what is available, however Alex believes they will be well into their "Goldens" at that time. As we get closer to the event, they will be able to provide more details. Folks - This is a really good price considering you can't buy a decent beer kit for $30 to brew 5 gallons of beer.

Where: Rapid Creek Cidery

When: Thursday, Oct. 10, 2019, 6 PM - 8 PM

Why: Because we brew, and then we share and drink....it's what we do!

How: Alex is setting up a means for folks to place their orders for raw cider....more to follow on this...we should have something up and running early next week. I imagine we will have the option of bringing our own container, similar to the Wort Rally...but hopefully they will be able to distribute directly from their tanks...the day of the event.

We are opening this event to our friends at CRAZE, THIRSTY, MADCO, IBU Local 334, Dubuque Area Society of Brewers: DaSOB's.....and anyone else we believe would like to participate?

Cysers are welcomed too.

There will be a tasting event/People's Choice Competition sometime next Spring (avoiding the Benz Beer Festival date and our Happy Hour)....not a lot of details here either, but we will evolve this over time.

SAVE THE DATE.

A formal judging(bottle entry) or just a people's choice?

At this point, we can have a People's Choice.....we might be able to get the folks at Rapid Creek to judge the entries.

This event is around the corner, please RSVP here so I can estimate our participation.

I will be applying for at least 5 gallons.

I'm a tentative yes. Wife's birthday is that day[emoji33]. Luckily she likes cider.
