2020 Lion Bridge/CRBS Wort Rally and Pro-AM Qualifier

Post by daryl »

2020 Lion Bridge/CRBS Wort Rally and Pro-AM Qualifier - Preliminary Information

Here are the tentative dates for this year's wort rally - but we are locked in on the Wort Pick Up Date....it will be in Lion Bridge's Brew Schedule.
Registration Open - within the next week
Registration Closes - Monday, March 9, 2020 at 9 PM
Bucket Drop-Off - Thursday, March 12, 2020 at Lion Bridge Brewing Company, between 5 PM and 9 PM
Bucket Pick-Up - Friday, March 13, 202, at Lion Bridge Brewing Company. Pickup time will be posted later.

Formal Judging - Saturday, April 25

Tasting Event - Sunday, May 24 (the Sunday before Memorial Day).

This year we will be using the Bridge Beer wort. All entries must use the 2020 Bridge Beer wort.

You will be performing two registrations...one for the Wort Rally wort, and a second for your entries into the competition. In this way, brewers can calibrate their submissions to the finished beer.

Lion Bridge intends to select at least one winning beer of their choice (Gold, Silver or Bronze in Best of Show or Best in Class/Flight), to brew on their system for the purpose of pouring it for sale in their taproom and for submitting as an entry for the 2020 GABF Pro Am Competition.

Begin your trek to the 2020 GABF at: http://cedarrapidsbrewingsociety.org/bcoe/
In the Fridge/On Tap: English Bitter, Schwarzbier, Cream Ale
In the keg: Wheat Beer, Russian Imperial Stout
In the bucket:

Will beer turn-in be at the April CRBS meeting?

We should be able to accommodate that.

And drop-offs and mail-ins can occur at Lion Bridge.

Just realized that the April meeting is also the turn-in for the Red IPAs. So, maybe wort rally turn-in should be separate time/place??

Do we know the approximate gravity of the wort this year?

Not yet, but I am expecting it to be lighter than the Yard Sale wort.....Yard Sale is at 6.7% ABV....Bridge Beer is 3.6% ABV.....3.1% points different...nearly half.

My numbers are from Beer Advocate.

I’d be surprised if it’s over 1.030 but I’m planning what I’m going to do. Forgot it’s just over a week away

The following information should be useful in formulating your recipes...

The grain bil for this wort is roughly:

92% Cargill 2 row malt
6% Munich Malt
1-2% Melanoidin Malt

Expect 1.042 as a starting gravity.

Srm will be about 3

Buckets will begin to be available between 1 and 2 PM. If they are ready earlier, I will post that information here and on Facebook.

I would be suspicious of the 1.042 Starting Gravity Number.

If they are telling us that we can expect an OG of 1.042 after we boil it makes sense.
OG 1.042 FG 1.010 is ballpark 76% attenuation. That is a touch high, but reasonable for a 3.6% final beer.

I am expecting it to be around 1.030.

IDK maybe LB has their equipment dialed in to a point they know that they can create 1.042 wort with great efficiency, and they water it down to 1.030 before the boil. Would it make sense?

Post the gravity of your wort as you pick it up here. Call it refractometer/hydrometer calibration.

When I dropped off my keg yesterday at 4:30pm, Aaron said that he was going to start this morning at 8am and hoped to be done by 11am. Did you get different info later? I'd plan to go down for lunch shortly and pick up my keg, but don't want to make an empty trip if they aren't going to be ready for pickup then?
