Red IPA competition

Post by carrisr »

For those who made Red IPA's for the style competition let us know what you prefer. We most likely would push the turn-in to August or September.

Turn in at grain pick up.

I don't want to brew another one because I don't like the style.

I am polling the Cabinet....I will post their guidance here.

We will either cancel the Red IPA Comp or we will set a date. Members can elect to participate or not; or re-brew or not.

Ya, the one made this winter, I felt that the specialty malts masked 90% of the hop complexity. While I have enjoyed some on occasion, I don't want to make a full keg again. They seem to have a lot of crossover into the style of "fresh hop harvest ale" also to my pallet. Maybe someone could use a minimal amount super-dark-red coloring grain just for color and not mask hops...

The Cabinet did meet this evening and here is what the Cabinet has suggested.

The Red IPA turn-in will coincide with the Mead turn-in, on Thursday, May 21. A time and location will be announced soon.

Alternatively, if your entries are ready to go, when it is time for the grain pickup - you can drop off your entries on that assigned day and time of the grain pickup (at Clockhouse).

Cream Ale turn in will be in July.

Randy will provide more info as the details are worked out.

Stay safe...and keep brewing!

For anybody that wants to unload their red ipa or mead entries I can take them this weekend. I should be home pretty much all weekend so anybody wanting to can stop by and drop them on my back doorstep. Address is 3320 crestwood dr nw in Cedar Rapids. Let me know if you’ll be dropping off.

If you are participating in the RED IPA competition and you cannot drop your entry off with Travis, please post here so that we can make other arrangements.
Otherwise, we will presume what Travis collects, is what is needed to be judged.
Thanks

Plan A is to drop off my Red IPA entry at Travis' on Saturday late afternoon, looking for a break in the rain.

I will also have a mead entry.

Plan B is Sunday afternoon drop off.

Got entries from Mark, Tony, Logan, and Joel. If anybody else has a turn in for red ipa or mead I’ll be taking them thru the weekend. If that doesn’t work we can get arrangements made to collect.

I’ve got a red ipa to turn in. Can I drop it off this evening or some time tomorrow?

Ya I don’t think I’ll be going anywhere. You can come up the driveway and leave by the back door.

I'm asking the judges (whoever they might be) to please consider that this beer was brewed to be judged mid-April. It's now almost June (6 weeks later). So, there should be some allowance for a loss of hop aroma/flavor against the style guide.
