The style has been selected....it will be a Porter.

Attached is a PDF of the tentative recipe, it is based upon the Black Widow Porter from Brewing Classic Styles.

The current proposal is that the Club will purchase and/or provide the hops, the specialty grains, and the yeast....we have some flexibility on the yeast for those that wish to use a specific yeast (that is compatible to the Porter styles).

On October 1, participating members will bring their portion of the communal wort to where the barrel will be located (to be determined over the next few weeks). Meaning, that on October 1, contributing members will have their beer ready for barrel aging.....that is, the beer has completed fermentation. So, you will need to pitch your yeast for this brew by or before the weekend of September 12-13. If you pitch an adequate amount of starter by that Sunday, primary fermentation should be complete by October 1.

For your participation, you should expect to receive 3-4+ gallons of barrel-aged Porter for your personal use, for every 5 gallons contributed to the effort. The remainder will be used for Club activities (Barrel-Aged January Tasting Events, Happy Hour, our Festival, other Festivals, and Tech Meetings). I am suggesting that we bottle half (or more) of the Club's beer and cellar it for Barrel Aged January 2022.

I will create a separate topic that will be used exclusively to recruit and track participating members...all other discussions should be posted here.

And in a later post here, we will provide more details on the process of getting this project completed....and outline the use of the barrel for the next brew (to be placed in the barrel soon after the Porter is dumped in late December/early January).

Have we decided how (or if) we're going to acquire and distribute the hops, specialty grains, and yeast? Was planning on placing a ritebrew order today so was curious if I should order my porter ingredients as well so I can brew this weekend or early next week. I wouldn't be opposed to everyone buying their own hops, grains, and yeast just to simplify trying to get them distributed in a timely manner but wasn't sure if someone already had something in the works

Yakima hops have been ordered, I hope they will be here on Friday.
I have the 40L Crystal, I will donate that to the club.
The specialty malts have been ordered and should arrive in time to distribute with the hops. UNLESS OTHERWISE REQUESTED....all grains will be separate and not milled. If you do not have access to a mill, just let me know and I will mill them for you.
Safale S-04 will be provided to brewers, one packet for every 5 gallons brewed - or you can provide your own yeast (no bugs please).
We can do a distribution Friday evening (at a location to be named later).

However, we do need more brewers. If you are interested in brewing for the Club Barrel Aged Brew, please sign up at https://cedarrapidsbrewingsociety.org/p ... f=6&t=4514

The Porter Brewers will get first shot at a slot for the 2022 Barrel Aged Brew....a much bigger beer; aging to begin soon after the Porter is pumped from the barrel.

My base grain for this (2-row and Munich) arrived today. I was hoping to brew on Sunday or Monday (being Labor Day).

Could I pick up the other ingredients from you (Daryl) at your place? Or, we could meet someplace for an acceptably socially-distanced pint.

I still need to get the hops in individual bags....but yeah. We should be able to connect today.

Let me get this task done and I'll get back to you via e-mail.

Anyone else wanting to brew this Porter this weekend?

I can be at Lion Bridge around 2 PM....and can stick around for an hour.

Will that work for today?

I'll be available at other days as well - I'll post here when I can be in town for brewers to come get their grain/hops/yeast.

And, anyone is welcome to stop by my place and pick them up....just give me a heads up so I make sure I am here.

There will be two opportunities for getting your brew grains/hops/yeast.

Today - Sept. 8 - between 5:00 PM and 7:00 PM at Lion Bridge

Thursday - Sept. 10 - between 7:00 PM and 9:00 PM at BIT Brewery, Central City

If neither of these times work for you, you are welcome to swing by my place to pick them up. OR....contact me and we will make other arrangements.

I will be at BIT Brewery in Central City tonight, 7PM - 9PM and I will have the CRBS Communal Brew specialty grains/hops/yeast.

I am trying to set up a time to be at Lion Bridge tomorrow, either early evening or late afternoon; and would have materials to distribute at that time as well.

Cheers,
Daryl

Are we still planning the beer drop-off for this Thursday, Oct 1? When and where should I plan to bring it? Andrew and I have 10 gallons ready to go.

I also have 10 gallons in kegs ready to go but have to head out of town for the weekend tomorrow around 4pm. Can I drop off the kegs before 4 tomorrow or could I drop them with someone else to get them to the barrel? Otherwise, I'll be back midday Sunday and can bring them then.
