Virtual Beer Sampling

Post by laloeb »

Virtual meetings have us all missing the sharing and sampling of beer from in-person meetings. At the next club meeting in March, we'd like to try a virtual alternative. During happy hour before the meeting, we'll sample two or three of the same beers. That way, we're all drinking the same beers at the same time, only separately. I haven't decided which beers yet, but they should be readily available from either Hy-Vee or Benz to give each member who wants to participate a chance to buy their beers before the meeting. I'm thinking of a minimum of one lighter beer and one dark beer. Let me know if you have suggestions. If not, don't be disappointed if I pick some truly awful domestics.

You could include (if available) a commercial example of the style that is next up in the Club Competition.

That would provide some palate calibration for the brewers and potential judges.

Whatever you choose, it will be fun, thanks for setting up this activity Logan.

I like that idea, 1 of the beers on the month of a turn in being the same style

After spending some time wandering around Benz, I settled on the following two beers. Jai Alai is available as single cans from the "make your own 6-pack" section, but Black Bavarian is only available in a 6-pack. I purchased the second to 6-pack, but the cashier assured me that it's one they keep in stock. Let me know if you have trouble finding either of them. I'll have a few spares of each that I can share. I think the plan is to allocate the March meeting happy hour to sampling these beers. We could probably condense the sampling into half an hour if people feel that an hour is too long. Mark suggested filling out scoresheets for each one, and I think that's a great idea. I know that I could use more practice.

Sprecher Brewing Co. Black Bavarian
BJCP Category: 8B - Schwarzbier

Cigar City Brewing Jai Alai
BJCP Category: 21A - American IPA

FYI - Benz is out of the Specher Black Lager and Matt doesn't know when they will be able to get some more. They have had issues keeping it in stock.

Oakland Road HyVee did not have it either.

And the Jai Lai was only available in a six-pack...so I picked up a six pack.

I picked up the last Specher Black Lager 6 pack from Benz. I can drop off some bottles if people would like them.

I grabbed the second to last six pack of Jai Alai from Benz. They were out of singles. If anyone wants to grab a can, PM me.

I couldn't get the Bavarian Black.

Would I be able get one of the Spechers off of you? I'll trade a barleywine or whatever else I can find downstairs

I still have a bottle or two of the Black Lager if anybody would want that. You can pick it up from my place, or I can meet you somewhere, or drop it off at your doorstep if you live around the Cedar Rapids area.

I also have 1 black lager and 2 IPAs to share, but people would have to stop by my place in Marion tonight before the meeting. Text me at 701-220-7529 if you want to pick one up.

Thanks to everyone who shared their resources to support tonight's virtual beer sampling. It was gratifying to see how you helped each other out, including me (thanks Logan).
Thanks to everyone who contributed or transported beer.
