For the first time, CRBS will participate in the Boil Rumble hosted by Melvin Brewing and Craft Beer & Brewing Magazine. We can submit one beer per 25 members of the club, and we invite all members to throw their hat in the ring. There will be a judging event at the June meeting, where the club members can sample the entries and vote for their favorite. The club favorite will be invited to submit their beer to the Boil Rumble, and the club will cover the shipping cost.

Contest details:
Must be 21+ to enter
No barrel-aged beers or wild ales
Preferred turn time of 4 weeks max
Each AHA Homebrew Club is allowed 1 entry per 25 members
Deadline window for entries is 7/5/21–7/19/21
Entries shipped to Craft Beer & Brewing magazine. Must send 6 x 12oz beers.
Champion and Runner-Up will be announced 8/2/21
Champion and Runner-Up invited to brew and chill with the Melvin crew in Alpine 9/6–9/10/21

My beer for Benz Fest will be ready by the June meeting, so count me in! How much beer should we bring to the meeting and is there a preferred format - bottles, growlers? Are we going to treat this like a club competition - blind judging?

Thanks for the good questions, Tony. While blind judging would be the best format to remove hidden biases, implementing it with (hopefully) many submissions and voters could be challenging. Non-blind judging would allow candidates to pour their own beer from whatever vessel is most convenient for them. Plan to bring 48-60 oz to ensure at least a 2-3 oz sample size for a large audience.

We haven't settled on a voting style yet, but we're leaning towards approval voting or preference voting instead of just voting for a single favorite. Approval voting seems easiest. There will be ballots, and each voter cannot vote more than once per candidate. Tally up the votes and the candidate with the most votes wins. I plan to discuss this at the May meeting to make sure people can weigh in.

Is anyone else thinking about entering? The June meeting is less than two weeks away. If you'd like to submit a beer for sampling, let me know by next Wednesday when I plan to make the ballots.

I have some nice 4-yr-old, barrel-aged, wild fruit ales.

How many strikes is that?

Three?

You're out!

Anyone else joining the Boil Rumble competition? I'll be printing ballots tomorrow night, but I'll leave a couple spaces for write-ins.

I think I’ll be there now, so I’ll throw in a beer.

Enough for our usual group at a meeting. I'd plan on pouring at least 20 samples.
