Iowa Vote on Iowa Brewery Equality Bill (SF2091)

Post by bkanderson »

Send and e-mail to all these Iowa legislators asking for their support.

Just copy and paste their names into an e-mail and ask them to support the Iowa Brewery Equality Bill (amended version of SF 2091).

Iowa breweries are at a competitive disadvantage because they are
prohibited from selling beer above 5% ABW. Out of state breweries are
not subject to this restriction and are currently distributing through
the Iowa Alcohol and Beverage Division.

SF 2091 bill was introduced in the Iowa Senate today. An amended
version will be presented and voted on in the Senate State Government
Committee this Thursday.

The amended version of SF 2091 will…
• Provide an equal playing field for Iowa breweries and brewpubs to
manufacture and sell beer up to 12% ABW
• Allow Iowa’s beer wholesalers to distribute all beer up to 12% ABW,
rather than the current distribution through the Iowa Alcohol and
Beverage Division

Please email these Iowa Senators BEFORE TUESDAY and encourage them to support the amended version of SF 2091.

I am pretty sure the committee votes on this today. It is only the vote to get it out of committee, the senate will still have to approve it after that.

Iowa Vote on Iowa Brewery Equality Bill (SF2091)

Post by Lower Case T »

They pushed the vote to Tuesday the 9th.

Also,  I'm not sure if that second part....

Allow Iowa’s beer wholesalers to distribute all beer up to 12% ABW,
rather than the current distribution through the Iowa Alcohol and
Beverage Division

.....is in the bill anymore, and it will probably undergo a couple more changes before Tuseday.  Maybe just focus on the first point.  Which is the important one anyway as you all know.

Cheers!

They moved the vote to next Tuesday originally scheduled for today. It has never even made it out of committee so it would be a great first step.

From Siouxbrew blog:

Amended SF 2091 passes Senate subcommittee
February 8th, 2010
Amended SF 2091 has been passed out of a subcommittee of the Iowa Senate’s State Government Committee.

The bill is scheduled to go to the full committee during its meeting at 9 am tomorrow and must pass out of that committee and into the full Senate by the end of the week to make lawmakers’ self-imposed funnel deadline.

Bills that fail to pass out of committee by the deadline are essentially dead.

Good news from Travis Scheidecker

Post by DaveCo »

Just across the wire.................

The Senate's State Government Committee met this morning and
unanimously passed Amendment 648 of SF 2091. I haven't seen the
amendment online yet, but they did say it was for 12% ABV. Senator
Black mentioned the house has been discussing capping it at 10% and
that they'd deal with that when it comes. I believe the next step is
that it goes to the Senate floor for a vote. No word yet on when that
will happen.

Dave, is it for 12% ABV or 12% ABW. My understanding is that the orignial bill called for 12% ABW. Trying to confirm whether this is a typo or they changed amendment to ABV? 12% ABW is equal to about 15.3% ABV which is big enough to cover almost any catagory.

Iowa Vote on Iowa Brewery Equality Bill (SF2091)

We think someone changed it at the last minute because 10 % was an easier talking point.  (thats a guess by some Iowa Brewers Guild members)   I received a follow up email on this topic.  It said this:

The senate haven't dropped the percent. It was approved at 12% but
they did mention the house was talking about 10%.

I think when she ( Jill Havercamp from Old Maine brewery ) says 12 % and 10 % she is meaning ABW.

So we'll have to wait and see what the bill actually says when its released.  I'll let you know as soon as I find out.  And you all do the same please.  I'm glued to the edge of my seat now!  =)

Brewery Equality is on the way!  This oppression will not stand man!
