Independence Brew-B-Q, August 28, 2010

Post by Derek »

One of my dad's friends is on the committee for the Independence Brew-B-Q. They're trying to expand the offerings at their brew portion of the Brew-B-Q. They've got the usual distributors that do this event each year, along with Millstream and Hub City. The only hombrew club has been CRAZE from Cedar Falls.

He wants to know if we'd be interested in serving beer at this event. The timing isn't great, it is the Saturday before Labor Day, 8 days before the Festival of Iowa Beers in Amana.

I'm willing to get a couple beer together for the Independence event, and, if I can borrow the club banner, we can have some presence there.

Anyone else interested?

That looks like a great time. I could brew a keg for that event.

I’m not sure how other folks think, but maybe we switch it up this year and concentrate on the brew-BBQ and then make the iowa beer thing a secondary attempt if we still have the beer and steam left to make it.

Derek, you know how the non profit works, I was reading the vendor section. It seems they charge non profits, but of course we can’t sell anything.

This event sounds cool and if we can get some beer and people there that would be great.

I disagree with Travis, making the Festival of Iowa Beers secondary would be foolish. That particular event provides the greatest visibility for the club each year. We have had many people come to meetings and some members have joined as a result of attending that festival. Also, it will be the first year our professional friends can bring some big beers which may be more fun for everyone. I think you are biased a bit Travis as you have a hatred for that event. It is also the largest gathering of homebrew clubs at one time in Iowa. Last year there were 7 or 8 clubs. So far only one has showed up to Independence.

I have lots of family around Independence and would love to squeeze it in, but know I can't do two weekends in a row for beer festivals. Also, we are less likely to find new members around Independence than the festival in Amana.

I would love it if we could do both. Lets discuss at the March meeting and see if we can get members to go to one or the other, or both. If we have enough interest than cool. Derek will be in for Independence. It would be nice if a few more can join him. I am in for the festival in Amana.

At least they probably won't charge use to provide beer at the Beer-BBQ.

I hate to say it but I am with Travis on this one. However, I was not planning on brewing for the IA festival of Beers this year anyway, I am just going to be a participant. Costs me the same amount of money to get in and I don't have to give away over $100 worth of Beer.

Matt does have a valid point about picking up solid members though at that event. We have gained some wonderful brewers and friends from attending that event.

As Matt said this is something that should probably be discussed by the Beer Nuts at the next meeting, as both have their upsides and downsides.

I should be able to attend both. I do agree that Benz event and Amana event are our biggest draws for members. It would be a disappointment to abandon the festival of iowa beers.

I plan on brewing for both events.

I don't think it has to be a one or the other thing. Many members will have scheduling conflicts with one or the other of the weekends. Or may wish to selectively participate for philosophical reasons (Jeremy).

The Independence Brew-B-Q is a smaller event. They had maybe between 300-400 people for the beer tasting event last year. The beer tasting itself was held in a fenced area within the larger Brew-B-Q, with a bandshell and food vendors (and BudMillerCoors) also in the park. They want to make it a bigger and better thing, and are very open to ways to make that happen.

Joe (my dad's friend) indicated he and maybe one or two other members of the committee would be interested in coming to a meeting or meeting with the club leadership committee in the next month or two and talking about the event as well as getting ideas for improving, expanding, and adding to it.

Travis, the vendor section is for those wishing to sell food, I don't think it would apply to us since we are giving our beer away.

Hate is a strong word..

But your right that I have mixed reviews on the IA fest of beers.

But I do like the idea of BBQ with my homebrew! J

I guess I should have posted, I would be willing to contribute to the Independence Beer-BBQ. Derek, could you maybe get some more information about it for presentation at the next meeting?

Maybe we could split into a couple of groups those who are willing to support the Independance Beer-BBQ, those who are in for Amana, and those who have the bandwidth and desire to support both events.

I'll brew about 5 gallons for the Beer-B-Q. It'll just be in growlers and such.

I would consider both. Like it or not IFOB is the biggest beer event in Iowa. I'll have to see if the BBQ weekend is still open, but I should be able to make it.

Derek
1) What do the proceeds go too; I am all for providing free beer to help charity, but to give free beer to line someone’s pockets bothers me?

2) If it is for charity, how much of the proceeds go directly to the charity?

3) Is there anything in this for the club, Benz gives us money every year to participate in their event, while we did not ask for it, it is an extra incentive for us as brewers if the club benefits from it, as this enables us to grow the club and have funds to work with as a club?

4) What kind of exposure would the club gain from it; would there be any sort of advertising perks for the club, other then displaying our banner?

5) Do we have to pay as individuals to gain entrance to the event if we are providing beer, this has always bothered me about the IFOB; we donate free beer and are still expected to pay to gain entrance?

I will post more if I can think of any.

I agree with Canadian J. I don't like the pay to get in when you bring free beer much. I also understand not letting us get about 20 people in for free. Tough act to balance. Seems like we could get more than four. We do get our grain though which saves me about $200 each year. I am going to see about doing both if I can get the OK. BBQ and beer is a heck of a match.

People should not get in for free just because the are with a beer club. With that said if we are bringing more then 5 Gallons Obviosley you are contributing on the positive side, and helping her draw participants. Guess, I must just be a grump, cheap ass because I seem to be the only one bothered by this. I ended up paying admittence last year and brought 15 gallons of beer. That does not seem fair in my mind.

So I have decided to brew for the Benz event this year, they appreciate our participation greatly. Not only do they not charge us, they pay us for paticipation. Will also focus on the Beer-BBQ if that looks promising
