AHA National Big Brew Saturday, May 1, 2010

Post by Matt F »

AHA National Big Brew is May 1, 2010. We need to start making plans. Last year we had a fun day at Third Base Brewery. Think about what you would like to do this year.

http://www.homebrewersassociation.org/p ... mebrew-day

There are three recipes this year:
American Craft Beer Wheat
Scottish Export 80 Shilling Ale
Rocktoberfest

or we can always choose our own.

On Tap:
American IPA
Strata Hazy IPA
Dr. Lee Orval
American Strong Ale

I agree, last year was a great time, except for the fact that we never drank any of our beer! Anyone care to tap a year old keg of Saison, which I understand is still in the back of 3rd Base?

I liked the idea of the "tribute" beer to this fellow - I have to admit I don't recognize his name/brewery, but if BYO thinks this guys is someone special, then "hats off" to him! Let's brew his beer - the Scotch ale sound better, if we use 3rd Base again, as T doesn't lager, so the Rocktoberfest might not be feasible. However, that would be my first choice, given that this is the bicentennial of Octoberfest. Even if the club doesn't do it for Big Brew Day, we should think about doing an Octoberfest beer for this year!!

Greg Noonan is one of the fathers of the brewpub in America. He has several great books. I can't remember the specific titles but one is something like the 7 Barrel Brewery which is a guide to running a small brewpub and great book on brewing lagers. He is viewed in many circles as one of the key players in establishing the craft beer movement in America.

Here is some info from a website:
Greg was one of the best known craft brewers in America, having pioneered the craft beer industry for microbreweries and brewpubs. His books on brewing are mandatory reading for both home and microbrewers, including "New Brewing Lager: The Most Comprehensive Book for Home and Microbrewers" published in 1986 and re-issued in 2003. He was a well-known speaker at brewers’ conferences and author of numerous trade journal articles and books. He provided his expertise by consulting on the startup and design of several pubs and breweries, and helped legalize brewpubs in Vermont by lobbying the legislature for three years to allow pub brewing. His own Vermont Pub and Brewery which opened in 1988 is the third oldest brewpub on the East Coast.

I second Tony's suggestion to brew a tribute beer to Greg Noonan. His book, "New Brewing Lager Beer" is a phenomenal reference text for all-grain brewing. It isn't heady enough to be a scientfic textbook, but he certainly doesn't shy away from thoroughly addressing complex topics.

I agree Brewing Lager Beer is a great book.  And I had the privilege of a short discourse with Greg before he passed.  I asked a question on the Brewers Association Forum and he was the first to respond.  He was very kind, helpful, and funny.  All that in two emails!  :-)

Big Brew Day sounds like a good plan.  It was a lot of fun last year.  Lets decide what to brew and do her up.  I do still have that freaking keg of Saison in the cooler.  I tried it a few weeks back and its seen better days for sure.....Its not as bad as I thought it would be. Not good though.  What a waste  :-)   This year we'll have to make sure to have a plan for the beer that will go to y'all.  We could do 5 gallons or 30 gallons.  Doesn't matter to me.

So, if you decide you want to brew a beer here, I'm down.  And this year we can all be more prepared and things might go a little smoother.

Baconator he we come!

Wait.  Is that what you called that thing Tony?  The Baconator?  Or did I just make that up?  And do you have a picture of that beautiful creation?

It looked the same way the next day as it did going in..hahah..

Anyone have a pop up gazebo, it would be nice for some shade or rain protection possibly for that day. assuming its not as windy this year.

While not as stylish as the one above, I do have a camping screen we could use. It's not one of those EZ up things and requires some assembly. I also don't know it's big enough for what you have in mind. It's basically big enough to go around a picnic if I recall. I'll off that if no one has anything better.

Let me ask John. I think we have one of the EZ-Ups in the garage that belongs to the GLRC. If so, we should be able to borrow it for the day.

And Yes, it's called the Baconator. I have also found a similar recipe for something called Pork Fatties (as opposed to those other fatties!). If this Big Brew Day is a go, I will bring both, as long as someone brings the grill to cook them on. As you might recall, while my grill has wheels, it's not exactly "portable."

Everyone, Big Brew day is taking place At 3rd base brewing here are the details. I will also post to the home page.

May 1st.
8 AM
Back door of 3rd base
Bring your homebrew to share
Bring any snack you want or meat to grill, of course you can always eat at 3rd base.

We will be brewing the Rocktoberfest, and for those you who were not there last year, if you show up by eight you will have the chance to see the process from start to finish. Of course the brewhouse can't hold the whole club so please be considerate of those who haven't seen the glory.

Any questions, please contact myself.

I'll bring my Weber grill.  Last year we had two (mine and Larry's) and that worked well, so if someone else can bring a grill, that would be good.

Maybe Tony can bring his kamado.....
