Bavarian Hefe on Saturday

Post by JimPotts »

I'll be brewing a hefe on Saturday. And by "brewing", I mean going over to Karl's place, and having him assist me while using all of his equipment. :D

Actually, this works out well. I get assistance on my first all-grain batch, and Karl gets to test-run his new equipment without worrying about destroying his own batch of beer. ;) Plus, he gets to keep some of the beer.

A few pics from the brew session.

Since this was the inaugural run for the new brewing equipment, I figured I'd post a few pictures.

All in all it was a great success. Everything went pretty well except cleaning the mash tun still makes a mess and I cannot seem to avoid making a mess of myself. Also, I did have a some trouble getting the pump to prime. I still need to do some work to characterize temperature and volume loss rates for the strike and sparge water transfers. But, the counter-flow chiller worked great.

Of course, the brewery's namesake needed to inspect the equipment prior to brewing to make sure everything was up to standard.

Fly sparging in operation. The system is designed with a single burner and single pump. A selector valve routes the output of the pump to the HLT, the mash tun, or to a quick disconnect on the front panel.

Chilling operation. The Chillzilla worked well. I have an oxygenator to install on its output next. (Yes, those are margaritas on the brew stand. I was out of homebrew.)
