Peace Tree Brewing - Hop Wrangler 3

Post by tony b »

I'm all for supporting Iowa Brewers, but they have to step up and brew good beer!!

Tried the Hop Wrangler on tap at the Sanctuary last Saturday and didn't think much of it; but, it was my 3rd beer at that point. I gave them the benefit of the doubt and figured my palate might have been tired by then (it was right after a 2 Hearted Ale draft). So, I bought a bottle at the HyVee Drug to give it another shot. Drinking it as we speak. Conclusion - it wasn't that my palate was tired, this is just not a very good beer (IMHO). For an IPA (supposedly with 6 hop additions), it's not very aromatic and the taste is grassy and bitter, with not much maltiness at all.

Again, in the spirit of supporting Iowa brewers, I will give them a second shot and try another one of their beers before I write them off totally.

The hop wrangler is the only beer I have tried. While it is not a BAD beer, it is not a GOOD american pale ale. If the marketed it as an amber or something like that, I would probably be more accepting of it. You can't put the word HOP in the name of a beer, and not have the hops be the defining quality in the beer. In this case, the lack of hop character becomes the defining quality.

What the name implies to what you actually is get is deceiving. That said, once you ignore the name, I thought it was a pretty good lawn mower beer. A much more interesting than a Coors Light, but still light enough to drink one or three while cooling off. Now, if they could can it, it would be going tubing with me this weekend.

Cool, I'm with you on a balanced beer. I'll have to give this one a try.
