I'm planning to brew a Rye IPA based on Denny Conn's recipe this weekend. Anyone who wants come over is welcome. This will be my first partial mash so it could be interesting.
I'm doing an attempt at a kind of hybrid "brew in a bag" so it might be fun to see. I'm trying to get a process that is only marginally more complicated than extract w/steeping, and using equipment I have on hand. My mush tun is going to be a small 6-pack cooler, and I'm going to batch sparge in my boil kettle. It should be fun at the very least.
I also have four home brews ready to sample: my Irish Red, an IPA, an American Brown, and a Blonde.
I plan to get started between 10-11am, but am somewhat flexible if someone wants to come but can't make that time. My address is:
10502 246th Ave
Anamosa, IA 52205
You can either look it up on any mapping site or I can give you directions. It's not as far out in the boonies as it seems, as we're not actually in Anamosa. All paved roads. We have a large fenced in yard so you can bring your dog to play with my 3 if you like. Please either post, PM or call me if you'd like to come so I know who to expect. Seven two one two four four two.

It looks like I may need to move my time for this as something has come up Sat. afternoon. I'm either gonna brew earlier on Sat or on Sunday. No one has said they want to come yet, so if you want to come over now is the time to pipe up and let me know which time frame works best for you...

Met Coon at the AHAC. Sat in on his talk about easing into partial mash and whole grain brewing. He talked about this recipe.
Super nice guy. He's just an Old Hippy!

Yeah he's on several other forums and always seems pretty cool. This recipe gets talked about a lot so I thought I'd try it.
Things seemed to go OK. I mashed in only a degree from my target, but the temp dropped a few degrees over the hour. I don't think it will make a huge difference. If it finishes out a little dryer that would hurt as it's a big beer. My pre-boil OG was exactly where I expected it to be so I must have gotten good extraction. I was a touch high on my post boil OG, but I think I lost a little more water than I expected to due to absorption.
It should be interesting to see how it turns out.
