Thanks Kurt, you want to pick a style for this meeting, or let it be a free for all.

In the past we were in sort of a tradition of trying to choose a style to focus on, not that its the only beer style you can bring, but at least it helps us focus and compare more of the same flavors.

need some advise!

Post by bgarretson »

Hey guys..when is the specialty beer competition? I thought that was one of the catagories anyways..Also, I am currently trying to make an apricot pale ale with the thought of it being a litle more hoppy with hints of apricot. when do i add the apricot extract? I thought right before bottling..it's 5oz's of extract..use it all? Any advise helps!

Thanks, Barry

Specialty probably won't be until around the Christmas time frame. As we still have the American Brown comp before that one. So you have plenty of time to prepare for this one. I think we all need it as specialties can be difficult as there is almost a catagory for every beer now. The only way to really get in now is to mix to styles or do something really off the wall. Pizza beer anyone?

Oh and the answer to your second question of when do you add the apricot extract. You can add that in one of two ways. IF you do a secondary fermentation you can add there. Or if you are going right to keg or bottle, you can simply add the extract to the keg or the bottling bucket right before bottling. Note: you may want to add to taste as apricot is a flavor that is hard to get to come through in beer and fades rather quickly depending on the size of you batch, 5 oz maybe almost undectable, however, add it and give it a try. Hope to taste it soon!

Thursday June 24th meeting

Dave, I think there was a clone recipe for that in the last BYO… But a couple of cases of it at the next meeting would be rather impressive.

http://www.mapquest.com/maps?city=Cedar ... de=ADDRESS

I will be grilling pork loin sandwiches and my girlfriend will be making some sort of desert for us. I anyone wants to bring a side or chips that would be great!

You can park in the driveway or across the street on Meadowdale Dr., try not to park on E ave because the road is narrow and it blocks two traffic, I wish the city would get around to widening the road.

My house is the only house on E ave with a 3 stall garage.

I didn't buy any Furious, not really my style. I did bring back some CynicAle. It was on tap at BN5. Along with Furious, Rodenbach Grand Cru (AWESOME!), Pliney, and several others that all turned into a blur. 4 refridgerated trailers, 6 taps per side, self serve. Perfect start to a 4 day beer "education".

I'm surprised that you remember that much!

Hell, I probably couldn't name more than a couple of beers that I had that night. Very rough morning after.

If I tried I might remember more. Wish I could forget the "Blow It Out Your Porthole" though! Founders Crumudgeon was another good one.
I was surprised at the run of the mill beers at Pro Brewers Night. Flying Dog's Gonzo and Raging Bitch were good. Not the best place to start though.
Rock Hoppers from CO had a crazy bunch of Eis beers at club night. An incredibly smooth Iced Barley Wine at a whopping 22% was something to try. In all they had 5 if my blurry memory holds.

Don't forget the Drake's Hop something or other double IPA. I have to say the beer at the BN party beat the Pro brewer's night but Club night had some of the best beers I have ever had. That was a great beer event. I do actually remember a lot of the beers. It is that time between 12am and 4am that would get cloudy.

I love Furious, and the Beer Nuts, but at almost $10 a four pack, I will not be bringing a case until I win the Lotto.

Drake's Hop Salad? Since the BN's from the west coast, did they bring any other west coast goodies? Kern River or Alpine? I hate you guys.

I don't remember a beer list but they had a lot of double IPA's and most were from California. They just opened the doors and said go for it. Never had so many taps at my disposal I could pour myself. They did not have any Alpine.
