Hoff-Stevens kegs at Marion Iron

Post by TappedOut »

Not sure what good they are, but if anyone is interested, Marion Iron has 4 Hoff-Stevens kegs. At least that is what I think they are. They are useless for kettles, as they have a bung hole in the side. They also had one 1/6 barrel (I think) sankey - no spear. Again, nothing that I was interested in, but thought I'd pass it along if any of you are more creative w/ junk kegs than I am.

I've seen those kegs used on rat rods and old school street rods, do you happen to know how much they are?(my cousin builds rat rods) I'm on the lookout for some regular style kegs for all grain kettles if anyone happen to see any for a good price.

No, I didn't check the price. I occasionally check the stainless pile in search of cheap kegs for kettles too. So far, no luck.

I went by Marion Iron today and picked up one of the full size kegs and the torpedo keg. Stainless goes for a buck a pound, so together it came to a total of $40. when I got it home I realized I probably also paid a buck a pound for some pretty rooten dried-up bear. Nasty stuff.

The kegs are Firestone and were pretty beat up. I plan to make an insulated mash tun. so looks are not too important. I will probably pound out some of the larger dings.

I'll plug the side bung by either welding a stainless steel plate over the hole. or using a plate with a screw and a silicone rubber seal. Kind of like the man hole on a large tank. When all is said and done I will have a 15 gal insulated mash tun for under $70 buck.....

I also noticed that they had some stainless steel baking sheets with 1/8 inch hole pattern. It could make a good false bottom with two of them sandwiched together with an offset to adjust the hole size.

The torpedo is in good shape no digs. It is going to be my new 5 gal fermenter. Should work for the 3 gal batches primary or secondary for 5 gal batches. Being all stainless steel I understand you can heat sanitize it.
