2010 Beer Camp

It was actually much worse than that. It was a wonderful experience.

Thanks to Matt for organizing, and thanks to everyone who provided canoes, transportation etc.

For those who weren't able to attend, here's some highlights:

The four hour canoe trip turned into 6.5 hours, though to be fair, getting vehicles back and forth took a while, so we didn't get on the river until 1 or 1:30.

We spent at least as much time in the water as in the canoes, especially the last 1 or two hours. Apparently drunk people have trouble staying upright, go figure. I was pretty glad I had the presence of mind to put on my life jacket, as I ended up more impaired than I expected to be (I purposely only took 4 beers in the canoe, but there were lots of growlers along) and the water got deep towards the end. I have no idea how we managed to right our canoe and get the water out. But it was a TON of fun.

Great camp site, great weather, tons of mosquitoes. For future note, when drunken people (even females) show up from another campsite, it's probably best to ask them to leave. We were invaded for a time, and while it was sort of entertaining, they were more trouble than they were worth.

Kurt is pretty good at talking to the sheriff when he's drunk. I'm guessing he has some experience with that. The above mentioned invaders called the fuzz on us and accused us of slashing one of their tires. Pretty absurd considering we had no motive, and none of us were in any shape to stumble down to the rest rooms, let alone pull off anything remotely nefarious.

Adam from the Pella group came along and was a lot of fun. Though I have to say, for someone who built his own canoe he sure is challenged when it comes to staying in the boat. Not that I have room to judge. He also played his geetar around the fire, but was told to "play something louder" by one of the drunken visitors. I don't think he intended to get so much attention from a drunk-dancing dude (one of the invaders) and wisely put the 6-string away before it got any scarier.

As always, the Beer Nuts provided no shortage of good beer and good company. Thanks again to everyone for that. This was absolutely one of the best times I've had in a while.

at first I was bummed that I didn't have a camera to capture all the fun moments. but looking back on the evening, I'm sure glad we didn't have a camera. what happens at beer camp stays at beer camp!!!

Matt,
I was wondering if we could try and book camp site #1 next year. It's right on the river and looks to have electrical hook ups. Also, I don't mind camping in July but it's usually hotter than hell, early June might not be a bad idea being that August is so busy. I'm definitely tubing next year with the little floaties on my arms and might try a pace myself a little better because it's little harder to swim when your drunk.

I've only had enough experience with the law to keep me and everyone else out of jail in the past, so far so good.

Maybe next year we'll get more of Adam's Pella club to come along.

Its funny you mention that as I had similar thoughts on site #1. If we tube we could get out right at camp. I think the cost is only a littled more at $16/unit versus $13 so I think we could do that. Electricity adds a lot of options.

July is hot which is why I originally was a fan of September. It was hot for us Saturday but if we tube we may be able to beat the heat. I was avoiding June because of three reasons. It is typically a very rainy month and the rivers are often too high for safe tubing and swimming next to a canoe. It is also the month for the National Homebrew Conference and I want to keep that open. The final reason is I dated a girl in college that worked in a mosquito lab at Iowa State and one thing I remember her saying was the June was a bad month for mosquitos. Of course, you can't tell around her lately because it rains a ton every month lately.

I am open to June or July. I do want to get out of August and September though. I am glad people had a good time this weekend. It was a good party. I am looking forward to next year. Keep up the ideas and we can make it even better next year.
