Pliny The Lager Keg Hops?

Post by DrPaulsen »

I kegged my Pliny clone lager tonight. I followed the recipe from Farm House Brewing Supplies (except for the yeast) since they sell such a cheap Pliny Pack of hops. Because that recipe is different from the BYO "official" recipe, however, I picked up some extra Centennial & Columbus hops. Right now the beer has already seen about 4 oz of dry hopping. It tastes damn good to me and has a great nose.

Question - even though the beer is already tasty, do you think I should throw in the extra 4 oz of keg hops needed to equate the two recipes?

Lee, depends on who your asking. I think its going to come down to you.. I say if its good, don't @#R it up, but others might say, go big or go home...

I now that doesn't help, but I'm saying I'm not sure your going to get a clear concise answer.. except bring some to the next meeting.

I wouldn't say I'm looking for a clear, concise answer - hence the poll. This is probably one of those times when looking for advice really means looking for an accomplice. I'm pretty sure I'm going to do it, I just wanted to see what others thought. I mean, what's the downside? Too much hop aroma?

Though I'm far from an expert on hopbombs I say do it. My limited experience with the brown we make is the hop flavor drops out fairly quickly. If you go slightly over the top to start the hop flavor should hold up better for the life of the beer.

If you know where you could lay your hands on a coiuple of 3 gallon kegs you could try it both ways. I've usually found that I mess stuff up the most when I try to fix something that isn't broke.

If you need some encouragement here's what I did with my Pliny clone just yesterday:

yesterday was the day to throw in the second (and last) batch of dry hops.  I had planned on 2 pounds of Columbus, and 1 pound each of Centennial and Simcoe.  So I went to the freezer to grab the hops and the only bags of those varieties I had were a 3 lb bag of Columbus and a 2 lb bag of Centennial and a 2 lb. bag of Simcoe.  So rather than go through the trouble of weighing all that crap out I just added the extra three lbs to the fermenter.

So I say.... throw the damn things in there Dr. P!  You know you wanna.  And you know its not gonna hurt anything.  What else are you gonna do with them?

You should bring a bottle to the pub and we'll try ours side by side and talk recipe jive.  I'm shooting for the beer to be on tap by Oct. 1.

Thanks to everyone for the feedback.

I put the extra 4 oz of hops in last night.

Travis -- I'll take you up on that offer. I'll ping you in a few weeks once mine is ready, since it will probably take a bit longer than yours.

If you need an impartial observer I could probably be persuaded to try both if you twist my arm...
