any wlp550 or equivalent/similar available from anyone?

Post by hoboscratch »

Hey all, new to the club. I may have met some of you at the Longbranch when I joined. I've been buddies with Dave and Tim for years, and Tim is the one who got me into brewing.

Anyway, I am brewing a BIPA on Thursday. I got my ingredients on Sat and was a little buzzed after the game and without thinking put my yeast in the freezer along with my hops. Didn't realize it till 24 hrs later. I thawed it out in the fridge, and made a starter last night. As of this morning, it looked no different. Maybe its just gonna be a slow start, not sure, but just in case does anyone have WLP550, or a belgian equivalent that I could get tonight? I will gladly pay or trade some beers in exchange. Let me know! Thanks!

Going to be a little busy this evening, but if I can get my saison transferred, I could get you some Wyeast 3724. It would be from a yeast cake, so you would not need a starter.

Hmm, I will consider it. This might be more spicy than what I was going for but maybe I'll change up my profile a bit to accomodate it. If you don't get to it till tomorrow that's cool. As long as I can swing by Wed night at the latest.

Its in one of my bathrooms w the door closed and the heater vent open. so should be mid 70's in there. I did use some yeast nutrient. Maybe when I get home it'll be rocking and rolling...I don't have it on a stir plate, just agitating it every 30-60 minutes when I'm awake/around...

I do not have a substitute for you. Unfortunately, I believe your yeast is shot. Freezing the yeast will damage the cell wall. As I understand it, if the yeast froze, it is dead.

Yeah, that's my fear. I've read of success from various boards on the internets, but this is supposed to be a big beer (1.08x) so I might be better off getting fresh healthy yeast regardless of whether it comes back to life or not...

Do you have it in a relatively warm space?? On top of a fridge for something? Also I presume your just talking the smack pack, you could try and make a larger yeast starter as well as maybe some of the cells are still good and its just taking longer. If you did make a starter did you use some sort of yeast nutrient?

I’ve seen some pretty long lags if the temp is mild. I wouldn’t be surprised if it fires up later today…. Or maybe it all ready fermented while your sleeping and activity is done.

Started to see some action overnight. I've been shaking the hell out of it, so I think if I had a stir plate it would have acted up faster. There's definitely some activity, so they're still alive. Not sure how viable it will be tho. Will see if its gotten any better when I get home tonight. Otherwise I'll have to make some adjustments...

If even a few of them still live you can build enough to get a good starter. The only problem is how long it would take. I am thinking if you froze it solid, then you probably killed off at least 75% of the yeast cells. So you would most likely have to do this starter. Chill it let the yeast fall out of suspension, pour off the liquid, then make another starter, this would probably bring you back up to the volume of yeast cells that you would have had previously with only one starter.

That's a good idea, I'll do that tonight. I have to go to DSM for work on Friday so I'm going to stop by Beer Crazy and pick up some more yeast, which they have. Then I'll just pitch that if necessary
