CO2 refill
CO2 refill
I need CO2, I've always gone to Iowa Fire in Iowa City to get it done. I figured I would ask where you guys refill CO2 bottles. I'm always looking for a deal.

I refilled my last tank at Linweld on 1st Ave. I don't know it they just messed up or not, but they didn't charge me to test an old aluminum tank that was way out of date, they just did an exchange at their normal price. It was around $20 for 5#.

Watch out with Linnweld, If they ask you "what you are driving?", you need to tell them a pick-up. I went about 2 weeks ago, and did not understand why he asked so said I was driving my car. They would not sell me one as they now have a policy that you can not transport in a passenger vehicle do to possible release of safety valves. So I had to go down the road to air-gas.JimF wrote:I refilled my last tank at Linweld on 1st Ave. I don't know it they just messed up or not, but they didn't charge me to test an old aluminum tank that was way out of date, they just did an exchange at their normal price. Wow that’s crazy, I’ve been going to linnweld for over a decade.. well it was called something else before. Anyway, is airgas cheaper? Do they just do an exchange or refill your tank. Linnweld keeps raising their prices and Hawkeye fire and safety place I had some issues with getting my tank filled in the past but its been years so maybe its less of a hassle now.

I go to Hawkeye Fire & Safety to get my 20 lbs. tank filled. It does have to be pressure tested every five years. I filled mine three years ago and is still going strong. I drop off in the morning and pick up after work with no problem. They do exchanges too.
I tried CR weld off First Ave and they told me to go pound sand.

Actually I think they were a little cheaper then Linnweld, I think I paid $17 for an exchange.

Not trying to revive an old there here or anything, but just went and had my CO2 tank exchanged.
I had to stop going to LinnWeld as they now refuse to let you take full tanks with you in a passenger vehicle, so then I switched to AirGas, which was decent (about $.90/lb, for 20# tank).
However, when I went to exchange my tank today I found out that they had a significant price increase (like 25%). The price for a 20# tank exchange was $25.47 which breaks down as follows:
20# CO2 $19.40
Hazardous Material Charge $4.40
Tax $1.67
Which boils down to about $1.28/lb of CO2 which is getting awefully pricey as I saw Tom just had one filled for $.80/lb. So I just figured I would let everyone know about the price increase before they drive down there.

'T',
Linnweld has been purchased by a new company. This is a policy that applies to all compressed gases of any tank size I think he stated greater then 5#. So if they ask you when you go in. Tell them that you are driving a pick-up truck and you will be fine.

Hawkeye Fire hasn't ever asked. The only thing there is you drop it off. They only fill a couple days a week.
