Grains for Spring brewing?

Post by jjbuck »

Any news on if and when we might do a club purchase of malts? To my delight, I find my weekends somewhat free again and would like to replenish my stock. Was that purchase a year ago through Millstream? I like the Bries malts for quality and the price was very reasonable.

John -- I don't know if there are any plans for a group purchase this spring, but you might want to check out this website:

http://www.fiftypoundsack.com/

The site doesn't carry Briess, but does give free shipping and has very competitive prices on many European maltsters (relative to online homebrew stores). I'm going to order a sack of Best Malz pilsner malt once the store comes online. I have no idea what this guy's business model is, but I find it hard to believe the store will last so I'm getting my order in early.

Dr. Paulsen,
I too am looking for Pilsen and additionally 2row. I looked Best Malz website and found EFGDB at 81%. Is this a a good number? Is this malt a "continental pilsner"? At $65-$75 a sack are we going to save money on shipping from say NB $57 for a Belgian pilsner + shipping?

I need to stop and talk to Millstream. I would like to set something up for late January/ February.

John,
I think the Best Maltz Pilsen is a German malt. I've been using it with good results in my lagers.

I may be able to organize a group buy from North Country/Midwest Malts. My understanding is that they will still sell to customers who had an account set up before they changed policies. If enough people are interested I could get some details. They have a lot of grains you can't get from Briess, such as Maris Otter, continental malts, and Great Western.

Yep, the announced that all previous homebrew customers would still be able to order. In addition I do they they still perform bulk orders for clubs as they constitute large orders.

However, we should try to see if Millstream is still willing as the price is half of what it is even at Midwest malts.
