REMINDER: January Tech Meeting (1/5/2011)

Post by BrewHound »

Well,

It is time for the tech meetings again, I hope everyone weathered the Christmas and New Year season well and had a great time with family and friends.

This is a reminder of the Tech meeting on January 5th, 2011 at 8:00PM (tomorrow). Our teacher for this week with be Dr. Lee Paulsen, he will be going over how to elecrtify your brewery. Lee currently runs an all electric brewery in addition to holding an advanced degree in electrical engineering.

This is a topic that is particularly of interest to me as I am trying to put together an electric system currently. The primary advantage of an electric system is cost savings. Another is a greater ability to brew indoors without hazardous gases filling the air.

Anyway I hope to see many of you there tomorrow night, Just for the curious. If you have any questions or need further directions to my house please do not hesitate to call me. I am running the following on my taps.

American Brown Ale
Russian Imperial Stout
American Pale Ale
American Barleywine
Cyser

Slides for tomorrow night

Post by DrPaulsen »

All,

Please find a set of slides for tomorrow night's Tech Meeting attached to this post. Reviewing them in advance should help get people up to speed quicker. I plan to bring 6 color copies of the slides so folks can take notes during the meeting. I think you'll find the slides will not read like a text book and will not function as a stand-alone reference guide, but are intended to help direct the conversation and introduce people to the topic at a high level. In other words, if you want to learn anything, you'll have to show up and participate.

I will also be bringing some show and tell pieces of several of the electronic subcomponents discussed in the slides (sorry, my electric kettles are staying at home). Unfortunately, I don't have any extra water heater elements, so if anyone that is planning to attend could bring one, it would be appreciated.

Feel free to ping me with questions in advance of the meeting tomorrow night. If there are any topics I've left out that you'd like to cover, I'll do my best to include them in a revised set of slides.

See you tomorrow night,
Lee

All,

I've attached an updated copy of the slides for tonight. A few pictures of Franklin's electric HLT are included and I fixed a mistake in the sample calculation on slide 11.

Thanks,
Lee

Lee, I may have some questions about this. Maybe I can sit down and chat with you over a couple beers some other night.

Thanks to CJ for hosting and for everyone that came out for the Tech Meeting last night. I had a great time and really enjoyed our 2.5 hour introductory discussion about brewing with electricity. You guys had some great questions and even taught me a thing or two.

Whenever I get around to brewing again, I'll send out an announcement so folks can swing by and see a fully electric system in action.

As discussed last night, if anyone (even you, Tom Burns) needs follow-up help with some design details, modeling, or calculations, just let me know.

Thank you very much for putting together the presentation and leading the discussion Lee.

I think I can safely speak for all in attendance that the presentation was excellent and the everyone learned a great deal about the topic. Pound for Pound, I think this was one of the best tech meetings to date and really spoke to the reason why we have intitiated the tech meetings. Thank you again for taking time from your schedule to put this together for us. I know I feel much more confident in mixing drunk, water, and electricity now. Now what the hell did I do with that life insurance policy.

As stated in the discussion last night I am in the process of building a new system or at least will be once I finish my fermentation temp control rig that I am building right now. I am planning on doing some of the construction of my new brewing rig as tech meetings so that others who are interested can gain some insight from watching me electricute myself. Hopefully I will be able to have a demonstration of this put together by the March or April time frame.

Gotta concur. A very informative and fun meeting. Thanks Lee & CJ. I'm working on putting together an electric brewery in my basement, too, and got a lot of ideas to think about.

Thanks CJ for hosting and also a big thanks to Lee for a great primer on the topic. These meetings continue to be fun and informative. I also want to do an electric system, though it's probably 9-12 months out unless Michelle gets FT work.

Very good timing because from the amount of discussion going on on forums etc, I think electric brewing is going to be one of the biggest trends in the coming year or two. Hopefully we'll start to see more reasonably priced systems and ready made components become available as a result.

Thanks CJ and Lee. This was a great tech meeting! Electric brewing may be in my future. Brewing in my garage with the door even partially open in January and February isn't my favorite thing. (and I can't get the topless cleanup girls to show up either...)

NOTE: You miss a lot when you miss a meeting...

I definitely agree with the others, Thanks Lee and CJ for putting together a great Tech Meeting. This was my first meeting and my expectations are peaked. I'm now expecting all of them to live up to the level of this meeting. That might be a tough task for the next one.....

Lee, the content was put together extremely well and you did a great job in presenting it so it was understandable. I look forward to getting some pointers from you later this year when I attempt to convert my keggles.

Thanks for hosting CJ and letting us invade your place....oh yeah..... good beer too!

Thanks again
Doug
